Top five picks for technologies will change enterprise computing

This fall will see the adoption and increased widespread use of new technologies that will alter the way enterprise computing is accomplished. Some of these technologies come from the consumer technology side of the business, some are grown from labs, and some are the result of integrating existing technologies. Check out our top five picks for technologies that will change the game in enterprise computing.
1. Search, the next generation. Google grew into a huge company by capitalizing on melding search with context-specific advertising. The next generation of search will take the contextual idea about 10 steps forward. By combining search, social networking and location awareness, users will be able to add emotional context to search, and advertisers will be able to derive revenues from customer presence rather than customer awareness. The next generation of search is a huge opportunity in which neither Google nor Microsoft nor Yahoo is now in a position of dominance.
2. A virtual company means more than a garbled conference call. The mobile enterprise? Maybe, but right now the software to build virtual companies is sorely lacking in capabilities and integration. Replicating meetings both formal and informal, real-time sales results, and all of the myriad elements that go into running a real, face-to-face company should be the outcome of the business services available. Right now you can assemble disparate pieces of a business, but the virtualized, mobile enterprise is not yet there. But don't think that lots of entrepreneurs and venture capitalists aren't interested and investing in this area.
3. Virtualizing all the other stuff. Virtualization has a lot more legs than just cutting down the number of servers in the data center. Servers, storage, networking and client computing from desktops through notebooks and smartphones are all in line for the virtualization makeover. Virtualization management is catching up, but the big management console that lets you know the availability, security and capacity of an entire company full of virtualized devices is still under development. This fall will see those management consoles being introduced by a range of vendors.
Other Business News:
4. Cloud creator. Cloud computing is absolutely the buzzword king of the technology marketplace. But CIOs are still reluctant to turn their company's technology operations over to their Internet connection. Taking the existing business applications and adding cloud services that are always secure and always available is the business opportunity of the moment. Expect to see lots of promises and some actual delivery of these cloud services over the next couple quarters.
5. The X factor. The best thing about technology is that it is always in flux. The technologies that were going to be game-changing (client/server comes to mind immediately) often sputter and die. The technologies that are first discounted (search on the Internet, voice over IP, your college yearbook turning into Facebook) often become the dominant players. Trying to guess the next big thing is what keeps pundits in business. I tend to think that management technologies, including energy management, education management—providing distance learning and measuring achievement—and financial management for both the public and private sectors will be a big deal. But we'll have to see how that develops.

Top 5 Steps to Create Your Own Android Trojan

Some users are shocked that Google can remove stuff from your Android phone remotely. I'm more alarmed at the ridiculous ease with which malicious coders can create Trojans for Android.Google Ready to Put Android EverywhereHere are the five simple steps Chien demonstrated:
One. Start by downloading a free app. You can choose any app at all, but of course you'll want to pick something that will draw plenty of downloads.
Two. The language compilers that create applications on your PC take textual source code and convert it into assembly language that the CPU can read and process. It's a one-way translation; there's no way to go from the final executable file back to the source code. Android apps are written in Java, though, and that means that you can decompile them back to the original source code using simple, easily-available tools. For the next step, decompile your target app.
Three. The third step is a little tricky. You'll need to obtain Java source code that does something nasty, like sending personal information from the device to a third party. For the demonstration, Chien used a known threat called Android.Geinimi.
Four. Adding the Trojan code is absurdly simple. You copy it into the folder containing the existing source code, make a small change in the manifest to run the Trojan code before the rest of the app, and edit the permissions to give the Trojanized app free access to the entire device. While you're at it, tweak the app's name. Chien added "FREE!" to the name for his demo.
Five. Compile the modified app and upload it to the market. You're done!Of course, malicious apps don't last long in the Android Market. If you really want to spread a dangerous program, you're better off uploading it in China, where there is no official Android market. In fact, virtually all of the examples referenced in Chien's presentation surfaced in the free-for-all markets of China.

Facebook will be the first company roll out PhotoDNA technology

While it’s great for business to be the leader, it also means that the social network has billions of photos to monitor and make sure abide by the company’s rules. Palo Alto today announced it will implement PhotoDNA on its network to further its commitment to keeping children from being victimized.
Facebook will be the first company outside of Microsoft to roll out the Redmond company’s PhotoDNA technology — a move that the companies are describing as a big step in the fight against child pornography, given the social network’s large user base and its potential to prompt other online services to follow suit.
PhotoDNA, developed in conjunction with Dartmouth College, derives what amounts to a digital fingerprint from photographs to be able to find and identify other versions of the same images online. Microsoft previously donated to PhotoDNA to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.discount laptop batteriesAsus a32-f3 battery,Dell d620 battery
“We hope that Facebook’s adoption of PhotoDNA serves as a springboard for other online service providers to take advantage of the opportunity available through NCMEC’s PhotoDNA program and, in fact, we know that others are exploring the possibility right now,” writes Bill Harmon, an associate general counsel in Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit, in a post this morning.
Harmon notes that Microsoft has implemented PhotoDNA in Bing and SkyDrive, identifying ”horrific images on our services that we would have never found otherwise.” He adds, “To date, we have evaluated more than two billion images on our services using the PhotoDNA signatures provided by NCMEC, leading to the identification of more than 1,000 matches on SkyDrive and 1,500 matches through Bing’s image search indexing.”
Facebook will hold a live event at noon Pacific on Friday to talk about the PhotoDNA rollout. (Note: Day corrected since original post.)
Microsoft is a minority shareholder in Facebook. More in this New York Times post this morning. Here’s a Microsoft graphic showing how the technology works.
acebook has joined Microsoft in sublicensing the technology for use on its own network. The company is the first online service provider besides Microsoft to adopt the PhotoDNA technology. NCMEC is hoping that Facebook’s decision to join will significantly expand the program’s impact, not only because the website has 600 million users, but also because it may convince other companies to follow suit.

How to make your systems save when downloading the files to their computers

In the past few days since these scams surfaced, a number of MacFixIt readers have contacted us wondering about whether or not their systems are safe after having seen the site on their systems or even downloading the files to their computers. They want to know what they can do to check for and remove the malware.
What the recent malware does
If you have seen the "Apple Security Center" Web site and have clicked on the "Remove All" button, the site will download an installer file for malware that runs locally on your system. The program is distributed in several forms that so far have taken the names "Mac Defender," "Mac Security," and "Mac Protector." When installed it will run in the background and launch pornographic Web sites and other unwanted content, and show a fairly clean and crisp-looking scanner interface that will ask you to purchase  Acer extensa 5220 batteryApple a1185 battery an upgrade.

If you provide your information to the program, you chance identity theft and charges to your credit cards.
Removing it!
Luckily the malware is fairly easy to remove, as it basically runs as a background process on your system that is launched by an action the user takes (logging in, etc.). If you have not installed any programs or opened any files downloaded from these sites, then you should be good to go and can just delete the downloaded files. If you have only visited the site and have not downloaded any files, then you do not need to do anything.

However, if you have opened the downloaded files and especially if you are seeing the malicious behaivor (unwanted pornographic sites randomly opening), or the scanner program launching and saying you have infected files, then you will need to check for and remove the program. To remove it, follow these steps:
Shut it down.
Open the Activity Monitor utility and perform a search for the malware (or browse through the list of running processes for it--sort by name to prevent the list from jumping around). The malware should be called "MacDefender," "MacSecurity," or "MacProtector" and will be running under the current user's name (see the "User" column of activity monitor). Reputable antivirus software for your system will be running under the user name "root" and will have required a full installation that required you to supply your administrator credentials.

With the malware selected in Activity Monitor, click the "Quit Process" button and confirm to quit it (use the force-quit option if it will not quit).

If you want to use the Terminal to do this, you can run the following command to kill the processes by name (the "sudo" portion may not be needed, but this will ensure the system can fully kill the running processes):
sudo killall macdefender macsecurity macprotector
  1. Remove the program.
Go to the /Applications folder and move the program to the trash (it should likewise be called "MacDefender," "Mac Security," or "Mac Protector"). Also locate the installer file (likely in your Downloads directory, or wherever you have Safari store downloaded items) and move it to the trash as well. When you have done this, empty the trash.
  2. Remove references to the program.
So far the program is launched at log-in by the system's "Login Items" feature. Go to the "Accounts" system preferences and choose your account name. Then go to the "Login Items" tab and remove any reference to the software from that list.
Ongoing protection
With the malware removed your system should be good to go; however, there is always the possibility that the malware will change in the future and adopt a new name or a new method of trying to trick users. Generally malware is more prevalent on underground, software piracy, and pornographic Web sites, but numerous people have reported the current Trojans showing up when browsing MSN and other reputable sites. Therefore, in order to better protect yourself you may need more than basic Internet "street smarts." To better protect your system, try some of the following suggestions:

  1. Disable auto-handling of files
Apple supplies a few options to automatically handle files, including the option in Safari to automatically open "Safe" files. Unfortunately the files that Safari considers to be "Safe" are not always so. Therefore, go to Safari's preferences and uncheck the option to open safe files.
  2. Always manually install programs or open documentsIn addition to Safari, check your other Internet-based programs such as e-mail clients, chat programs, and Web browsers to see if they automatically launch files received from the Internet. For instance, Mail has an option to automatically add iCal invites to your calendars. Turn this feature off and manually click on any received invitations only after you have confirmed they are legitimate. Do this for all files received  Dell latitude d830 batteryDell vostro 1500 battery on your system.
  3. Install a reputable malware scanner. There are a number of reputable malware scanners out there, so purchase one, install it, and keep it updated with the latest malware definitions. Some of these scanners are free, and others are commercial products (this list is not complete):
  4. Set up specific downloads folders
Know where your programs download files on your system. By default most will use the system's Downloads folder; however, some will place files in other locations on your system.
  5. Dell latitude d600 battery
Protect your backups by excluding these download folders from them. This can be done in Time Machine's preferences or in the settings for a drive cloning utility if you use one.

Lithium-Ion laptop battery is no exception for batteries lifespan

Is your laptop starting to feel more like a desktop, constantly needing to be plugged in and recharged? This is a classic sign of capacity loss, where batteries become increasingly unable to carry a charge. Unfortunately, battery degradation is unavoidable. All batteries have a lifespan, and with a life expectancy of 2-4 years, the Lithium-Ion laptop battery is no exception. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to slow the degradation process.
1. Avoid Excessive Heat
This is quite possibly THE most important factor that will influence how long your Dell latitude d820 batteryDell vostro 1510 battery lasts. All manufacturers agree that it’s extremely essential to avoid excessive heat, which destroys the battery’s effectiveness. Apple recommends keeping your acer battery between 50F-95F when in use, with room temperature 70 F being ideal.
To keep your laptop–and its battery–within the recommended temperature range, use it on a flat surface that allows air to flow from the vents underneath. A cooling station is a great way to keep air circulating. You can get one for as little as $10 on Amazon. It’s best to keep your laptop off of bedding comforters, pillows, and clothing, these materials not only collect heat, but also prevent your computer from ventilating.
2. “When using wall current, is it OK to keep the battery in the laptop?” It depends.
Shoppers frequently ask if it’s okay leave the toshiba battery in your computer if it is plugged-in most of the time. This is a highly debated issue and there is a lot of inconsistent information on the web, even amongst manufacturers! Apple says you shouldn’t leave it in while Dell says it doesn’t matter. After examining the data out there, I’ve concluded that it depends on your computer usage habits.

You should remove your battery if your computer is ALWAYS connected to an external power source and frequently runs programs that require a lot of computing power (e.g. games, video editing software). Under these circumstances, there is usually a lot of heat coming from the laptop itself. If your battery is always next to this heat source, it will degrade quickly. This goes back to tip #1 above–avoid excessive heat.
According to BatteryUniversity.com, 40% capacity loss occurs in as little as 3 months if lithium-ion batteries are kept in extremely hot environments–above 140 F–while being fully charged.
If you’re always mobile, you shouldn’t worry about keeping your Dell inspiron 1520 batteriesDell inspiron 6400 battery in your laptop–so long as it doesn’t get too hot. Ideally, it’s best to switch off between external power and battery power to “keep the electrons moving.”*

3. Your Battery Should Calibrated Every Month
The on-screen battery icon, which displays your battery’s current charge level, becomes less accurate over time. You might have experienced this firsthand–I definitely have.
One minute, your battery shows an hour of charge left, but just a few moments later, it’s down to 20 minutes.
Sometimes the battery meter may report a substantial amount of charge remaining, when in fact, the hp battery actually has much less than that. This can cause your laptop to shut down unexpectedly.
Calibrate the battery every month or two to keep the charge meter accurate.

Apple's launch of the Wi-Fi iPad 2 in China

The iPad 2 went on sale at Apple Stores in China at 8 a.m. Friday. The touchscreen tablet also launched on the China Apple Online Store, which was taken down early Friday and returned with an iPad 2 shipping estimate of one to two weeks.

At the Cupertino, Calif., company's flagship store in Beijing, the line still numbered in the hundreds by 10 a.m. local time. Apple retail staff carefully managed the line, allowing just a handful of customers in at a time. Dozens of scalpers congregated outside the retail store, offering to sell the device, which starts at 3688 yuan ($568), for a markup of just 200 yuan ($30).
The launch drew noticeably more customers than last year's launch of the original iPad. However, weather may have played a part, as last year's launch compaq dv2000 battery,Compaq nc6000 battery was rained out.
This year, Apple retail staff put in place more organized rules for customers choosing to wait overnight and provided a waiting room and numbered wristbands. The first customers reportedly began arriving at 5 p.m. the day before.
"If you leave the queue, an Apple staff member will take your wristband. If you return within one hour, it will be given back to you. If you return more than one hour later, you will be given a new wristband for a different place in line," one sign detailing the new rules read.
An informal exit survey of customers appeared to indicate that the white iPad 2 was more popular than the black model. Also, remaining inventory stored behind the Apple Store cash register was skewed heavily toward the black model, though the proportion of black to white iPads Apple that started the day with remains unclear.
White versions of Apple's products have proved popular in China in the past. Analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities said last month that China was "a prime candidate for a 'white' iPhone 4." The white iPhone 4 quickly sold out in mainland China when it was released there late last month.
Apple has made an effort to shorten the gap between the U.S. and China releases Cheap Dell inspiron 1520 battery,Dell inspiron 1525 battery of its major products. The first-generation iPad took four months to officially arrive in China, while the iPhone 4 saw a two month delay and the iPad 2 launched less than two months after the U.S. release.
iPad 2 launch in China
China's thriving grey market may have motivated Apple to shorten the gap between products. Last year, rampant scalping outside of Apple's stores in China resulted in a scuffle between customers and grey market resellers.
During its quarterly earnings call last month, the company indicated that its China strategy would serve as a model for similar emerging markets. Apple has been "on a tear" in China, with overall sales reaching just under $5 billion, roughly 10 percent of total revenues, in the first half of fiscal 2011.

BlackBerry 7 was predicted to come out as the first BlackBerry smartphone

Research In Motion (RIM) seems to be very much just that recently … In Motion! After just coming off a very successful PlayBook Tablet PC launch that saw 50,000 units moved in its first 24 hour period, rumors from some pretty reliable sources have the Canadian smartphone and tablet maker unveiling a new smartphone, the “BlackBerry 7”, as well as a new OS to operate it, as soon as next week. Consumer electronics manufacturers love making big announcements in cozy confines, and RIM is no different.
Next week in Orlando, Florida RIM holds its annual BlackBerry World Conference, the biggest RIM shin-dig of the year, and there is about a 99% chance the new BlackBerry OS will be red-carpeted at that event. Rumors are also pretty clear Dell latitude d830 batteries,Dell latitude d630 battery that a new smartphone will be released, and BlackBerry 7 has been bandied about, but not confirmed.
The OS is thought to be named BlackBerry 6.1, since the current RIM operating system for their smartphones is BlackBerry 6. This info was leaked rather openly from RIM internal sources, probably as an intentional way to build interest. The BlackBerry PlayBook tablet runs on RIM’s BlackBerry Tablet OS, and that doesn’t appear likely to change.
The possible name of the phone was revealed on CrackBerry.com. BlackBerry 7 was predicted to come out as the first BlackBerry smartphone to employ the QNX OS, but that doesn’t appear likely with this new OS announcement. And while they are announcing Dell studio 1535 battery,Dell xps m1530 battery, cool new toys, there is no doubt the new BlackBerry Bold Touch will also be revealed, this according to the gadget blogger BGR.com.
The Bold Touch is being hailed as a successor to the popular Bold 9000, and will most likely offer both GSM and CDMA versions, hitting the market this summer. On the not-so-sure rumor line, we hear that possible announcements of the Curve Touch and Torch2 smartphones may also spring forth from the BlackBerry World Conference next week.
This is a great time for BlackBerry to make a move against both the iOS and Android OSs that have leapfrogged them in the past 6 months, and left them in third place Dell vostro 1510 batteryamong mobile phone OSs, a sector they enjoyed #1 status in for several years. Rolling out two phones this summer, and another new mobile phone and OS immediately after could keep the heat on their mobile OS competitors, who most certainly will be releasing new models as well.
