Acer's tablet PC line-up has been warmly received by end users

PC builder Acer has declared war on its competitors by predicting that it will emerge as the leader of the tablet market in the years to come.
The firm recently unveiled its Iconia family of tablet PCs, which run on either the Android or Windows 7 operating systems.
Speaking at the PC vendor's summer partner conference in Windsor, Acer UK managing director Bobby Watkins said the devices are a fundamental part of the firm's growth strategy.
"We are super serious about tablets and we will lead the market in the next few years, which may sound like a bold statement, given how far ahead one competitor is at the moment," explained Watkins.
"[But] we have the broadest line-up [of tablet PCs] available and a big marketing campaign in place to support our plans."
Watkins said Acer's tablet PC line-up has been warmly received by end users, but admitted there had been some initial scepticism from the firm's channel partners.
"We launched the products seven or eight weeks ago. The response was similar to when we moved into consumer PCs - when retailers told us we were not quite there compared to some other brands," he said.
Despite this, he said the firm was "pretty relaxed" by the success it has had so far.
Other Business News:
"After [the first] three to four weeks on sale, we got to 17 per cent volume and 20 per cent of the value of the market, which is probably much better than many of the commentators in the market would have guessed," he added.
In more general terms, Watkins said the firm is comfortably ahead of its competition, citing PC market data from analyst GfK.
"If you look at the total PC market, we have about 30 per cent, which is the highest we have ever been in market share terms," he said.
However, he admitted the firm is selling more units as a ratio to revenue and margin than is sensible "at the moment", in the wake of its channel inventory woes.
"We are making some pretty bold decisions, and if I were one of our competitors with four to five per cent share, I would be feeling pretty cold and exposed right now," added Watkins.
"Market conditions are tough, and we can withstand that because of our strength in volume across our different channels."
Robert Peckham, chief executive of Apple consultancy Mac Technology, said that Acer's tablet PC line-up does not look likely to trouble Apple's dominance of the market.
"Acer's product range is impressive, but the Asus tablet is lower in price and the Motorola Xoom has good screen quality," said Peckham.
"I do not think it will pose a major threat to Apple's dominance, but it might do a good job of mopping up the rest of the market."

How to make your systems save when downloading the files to their computers

In the past few days since these scams surfaced, a number of MacFixIt readers have contacted us wondering about whether or not their systems are safe after having seen the site on their systems or even downloading the files to their computers. They want to know what they can do to check for and remove the malware.
What the recent malware does
If you have seen the "Apple Security Center" Web site and have clicked on the "Remove All" button, the site will download an installer file for malware that runs locally on your system. The program is distributed in several forms that so far have taken the names "Mac Defender," "Mac Security," and "Mac Protector." When installed it will run in the background and launch pornographic Web sites and other unwanted content, and show a fairly clean and crisp-looking scanner interface that will ask you to purchase  Acer extensa 5220 batteryApple a1185 battery an upgrade.

If you provide your information to the program, you chance identity theft and charges to your credit cards.
Removing it!
Luckily the malware is fairly easy to remove, as it basically runs as a background process on your system that is launched by an action the user takes (logging in, etc.). If you have not installed any programs or opened any files downloaded from these sites, then you should be good to go and can just delete the downloaded files. If you have only visited the site and have not downloaded any files, then you do not need to do anything.

However, if you have opened the downloaded files and especially if you are seeing the malicious behaivor (unwanted pornographic sites randomly opening), or the scanner program launching and saying you have infected files, then you will need to check for and remove the program. To remove it, follow these steps:
Shut it down.
Open the Activity Monitor utility and perform a search for the malware (or browse through the list of running processes for it--sort by name to prevent the list from jumping around). The malware should be called "MacDefender," "MacSecurity," or "MacProtector" and will be running under the current user's name (see the "User" column of activity monitor). Reputable antivirus software for your system will be running under the user name "root" and will have required a full installation that required you to supply your administrator credentials.

With the malware selected in Activity Monitor, click the "Quit Process" button and confirm to quit it (use the force-quit option if it will not quit).

If you want to use the Terminal to do this, you can run the following command to kill the processes by name (the "sudo" portion may not be needed, but this will ensure the system can fully kill the running processes):
sudo killall macdefender macsecurity macprotector
  1. Remove the program.
Go to the /Applications folder and move the program to the trash (it should likewise be called "MacDefender," "Mac Security," or "Mac Protector"). Also locate the installer file (likely in your Downloads directory, or wherever you have Safari store downloaded items) and move it to the trash as well. When you have done this, empty the trash.
  2. Remove references to the program.
So far the program is launched at log-in by the system's "Login Items" feature. Go to the "Accounts" system preferences and choose your account name. Then go to the "Login Items" tab and remove any reference to the software from that list.
Ongoing protection
With the malware removed your system should be good to go; however, there is always the possibility that the malware will change in the future and adopt a new name or a new method of trying to trick users. Generally malware is more prevalent on underground, software piracy, and pornographic Web sites, but numerous people have reported the current Trojans showing up when browsing MSN and other reputable sites. Therefore, in order to better protect yourself you may need more than basic Internet "street smarts." To better protect your system, try some of the following suggestions:

  1. Disable auto-handling of files
Apple supplies a few options to automatically handle files, including the option in Safari to automatically open "Safe" files. Unfortunately the files that Safari considers to be "Safe" are not always so. Therefore, go to Safari's preferences and uncheck the option to open safe files.
  2. Always manually install programs or open documentsIn addition to Safari, check your other Internet-based programs such as e-mail clients, chat programs, and Web browsers to see if they automatically launch files received from the Internet. For instance, Mail has an option to automatically add iCal invites to your calendars. Turn this feature off and manually click on any received invitations only after you have confirmed they are legitimate. Do this for all files received  Dell latitude d830 batteryDell vostro 1500 battery on your system.
  3. Install a reputable malware scanner. There are a number of reputable malware scanners out there, so purchase one, install it, and keep it updated with the latest malware definitions. Some of these scanners are free, and others are commercial products (this list is not complete):
  4. Set up specific downloads folders
Know where your programs download files on your system. By default most will use the system's Downloads folder; however, some will place files in other locations on your system.
  5. Dell latitude d600 battery
Protect your backups by excluding these download folders from them. This can be done in Time Machine's preferences or in the settings for a drive cloning utility if you use one.

Scientists developing Novel Ionic Liquid Batteries in Battery Technology

Battery Technology - Scientists developing Novel Ionic Liquid Batteries

Scientists at the NRL Materials Science and Technology Division are providing solid evidence that there is a new route towards developing novel, lightweight energy storage devices. By moving away from centuries of caustic, hazardous aqueous-based battery cells and instead using non-volatile, thermally-stable ionic liquids, scientists predict multiple new types of batteries. Rather than depend on highly acidic electrolytes, ionic liquids are used to create a solid polymer electrolyte composed of an ionic liquid and polyvinyl alcohol, developing novel types of solid state batteries with discharge voltages ranging up to 1.8 volts.
The unique properties of ionic liquids have fostered this explosive interest in battery applications. Ionic liquids are room temperature molten salts that possess many important characteristics, such as nearly no vapor pressure, non- flammability and lack of reactivity in various electrochemical or industrial applications. "It is the high thermal and electrochemical stability of the ionic liquids which has fostered the growing interest in ionic liquids for use in various electrochemical processes," said Dr. Thomas Sutto. "These new types of solid-state cells mimic standard alkaline cells, but without the need for caustic electrolytes."
From left to right: (A) a Zn anode (1cm in diameter), (B) an EMIHSO4- PVA separator (laying on a syringe needle to illustrate thickness and transparency), and (C) a PbO2 - carbon cathode.
Limits imposed by using corrosive electrolytes often result in severe restrictions to standard battery geometry and the need for special corrosive-resistant battery containers. The use of reactive ionic liquids in non-aqueous cells replaces the more hazardous highly alkaline electrolytes such as manganese oxide (MgO) and zinc (Zn) found in traditional Dell d630 battery,Dell inspiron 1300 battery.
The root of this work began during standard corrosion studies of different metals in ionic liquids. While working with ionic liquids based on mineral acids, such as hydrogen sulphates, it was observed that Zn metal would react to form zinc sulphate. Since this is similar to that observed for the zinc anode in a standard alkaline cell, a series of experiments were then performed to determine how different metal oxides reacted in these types of ionic liquids.
Electrochemical experiments demonstrate that not only can these reactive ionic liquids act as the electrolyte/separator in both solid state and liquid batteries, but they can also act as a reactive species in the cell's electrochemical makeup. Using a non-aqueous approach to primary and secondary power sources, batteries are designed using standard cathode and anode materials such as magnesium dioxide (MgO2), lead dioxide (PbO2) and silver oxide (AgO). The ionic liquid that is the main focus of this work is 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulphate (EMIHSO4), however, other ionic liquids such as those based on the nitrate and dihydrogen phosphate anions (negatively charged ions) have also been found to work well in this type of a Asus eee pc 1000h battery, compaq dv2000 battery design.
The use of these electrolytes suggests the potential for new types of rechargeable systems, such as replacement electrolytes in nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, or even the standard lead-acid battery. Experimental work is currently underway to develop such a rechargeable ionic liquid power source. The ability to create solid separators also allows for the formation of many new types of batteries via a number of fabrication techniques.

Store a Dell Xps M1330 Battery Properly to Save It from an Early Death

In the last two parts of this series, I covered the factors of temperature and charging. While the high temperatures inside modern laptops are probably the worst enemy of a  Dell xps m1330 battery, frequent discharge/charge cycles will negatively influence a battery’s life.
http://www.wholesaleeshop.com.au/laptop/
If your laptop is a desktop replacement, then you probably only need the battery every now and then. It can be quite frustrating if you want to use your laptop for the first time after a year without AC,
only to realize that your batteries are already dead even though you never really used them. However, if you remove the Dell xps m1530 battery from the laptop and store it accurately, there is a good chance that it will be in good condition when you need it next time.
1.Don’t store a battery that is almost empty. StoredDell xps m1330 batteries continue losing energy, albeit at a much slower pace. If the stored battery is totally discharged, it could be destroyed.
2.Don’t store a fully charged battery. Fully charged batteries deteriorate faster than half-charged batteries. Most articles I’ve read recommended storing laptop batteries with a 40–60% charge.
3.Store the battery at a low temperature. I usually put it in the fridge. It keeps my battery fresh and crisp. Check out this table at Wikipedia. 0°C (32°F) seems to be the best storage temperature. I wouldn’t put the battery in the freezer even though Li-ion Hp 2230s battery only freeze at approximately −40°C.

4.Store the battery in a dry place. A moist environment will accelerate discharging the Hp 484170-001 battery.
5.Check the Dell xps m1330 battery state every now and then. I would remove it from the fridge at least every 30 days to calibrate it (fully discharge and charge).
6.Let the battery warm up a little before you put it back into your laptop. If the temperature is raised too fast, it will strain the Hp 530 battery
7.When I started this article, I thought I’d just share a few tips I’ve found on the web. But then I realized that there are quite a few things that can be done wrong with laptop batteries. That’s how I ended up with three articles.

It is quite amazing that we can build space ships that have enough energy to fly to the moon but still have no decent portable energy sources for simple laptops. Perhaps fuel cells will change the picture in a few years.
