Scientists at the NRL Materials Science and Technology Division are providing solid evidence that there is a new route towards developing novel, lightweight energy storage devices. By moving away from centuries of caustic, hazardous aqueous-based battery cells and instead using non-volatile, thermally-stable ionic liquids, scientists predict multiple new types of batteries. Rather than depend on highly acidic electrolytes, ionic liquids are used to create a solid polymer electrolyte composed of an ionic liquid and polyvinyl alcohol, developing novel types of solid state batteries with discharge voltages ranging up to 1.8 volts.
The unique properties of ionic liquids have fostered this explosive interest in battery applications. Ionic liquids are room temperature molten salts that possess many important characteristics, such as nearly no vapor pressure, non- flammability and lack of reactivity in various electrochemical or industrial applications. "It is the high thermal and electrochemical stability of the ionic liquids which has fostered the growing interest in ionic liquids for use in various electrochemical processes," said Dr. Thomas Sutto. "These new types of solid-state cells mimic standard alkaline cells, but without the need for caustic electrolytes."

Limits imposed by using corrosive electrolytes often result in severe restrictions to standard battery geometry and the need for special corrosive-resistant battery containers. The use of reactive ionic liquids in non-aqueous cells replaces the more hazardous highly alkaline electrolytes such as manganese oxide (MgO) and zinc (Zn) found in traditional Dell d630 battery,Dell inspiron 1300 battery.
The root of this work began during standard corrosion studies of different metals in ionic liquids. While working with ionic liquids based on mineral acids, such as hydrogen sulphates, it was observed that Zn metal would react to form zinc sulphate. Since this is similar to that observed for the zinc anode in a standard alkaline cell, a series of experiments were then performed to determine how different metal oxides reacted in these types of ionic liquids.
Electrochemical experiments demonstrate that not only can these reactive ionic liquids act as the electrolyte/separator in both solid state and liquid batteries, but they can also act as a reactive species in the cell's electrochemical makeup. Using a non-aqueous approach to primary and secondary power sources, batteries are designed using standard cathode and anode materials such as magnesium dioxide (MgO2), lead dioxide (PbO2) and silver oxide (AgO). The ionic liquid that is the main focus of this work is 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulphate (EMIHSO4), however, other ionic liquids such as those based on the nitrate and dihydrogen phosphate anions (negatively charged ions) have also been found to work well in this type of a Asus eee pc 1000h battery,compaq dv2000 battery design.
The use of these electrolytes suggests the potential for new types of rechargeable systems, such as replacement electrolytes in nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, or even the standard lead-acid battery. The ability to create solid separators also allows for the formation of many new types of batteries via a number of fabrication techniques.

Last week I presented my top app recommendation for business at Java Meet Up (612), a networking group for marketing, PR, social media and tech pros in the Twin Cities. I’ll share it with you here, too, along with four other apps I’ve found helpful to increase productivity.
Evernote – an app that works across all platforms and devices (yes, even the Blackberry). The data synchs beautifully. The more I use this program, the more I can’t live without it. You can also tag your posts by topic or category and search easily.

If you use the traditional web site regularly and appreciate how it helps you stay connected with colleagues and access info on other professionals, you’ll like the app as well.  Although they are still working out some of the kinks, I like how the profiles are easy to read, you can send and manage invites, read and post status updates, and e-mail your network contacts all from your phone.
CamCard - This impressive app allows you to take a picture of an old-fashioned business card and import the contact information into your phone contacts. So far I’m happy with the Lite version, which is free in the Android Market. You can also keep images of the original cards in a virtual Rolodex of sorts. So far I’m loving this, but not sure I want every person I meet in my cell phone contacts… working out how to manage that piece and would love to hear Dell latitude d820 batteries,Dell vostro 1500 battery tips from others who use this app.
TweetDeck - Twitter can be a great business tool, if you leverage your interests and use it to build your professional network. I’ve tried a few third-party mobile apps for twitter and keep coming back to Tweet Deck. If you use the software on your PC, you’ll find the mobile version similar in features and design. On your phone, you use your thumb to swipe from column to column. It’s very easy to manage multiple twitter accounts (work and personal, for example). I especially like how it gives me a screen to have easy access to my top 12 Twitter friends, and tips me off if someone is following me or not.
Google Maps – The map app from Google saves me quite a bit of time. Just a few months ago, I was looking up addresses from my PC and either printing the directions or e-mailing them to myself to access from my phone.  Now I find my way to new places by heading to my google search screen on my phone and typing in the name of a business, restaurant, etc. In the search results, Google Places typically provides an address and “get directions” button. Once I click on that button, it gives me a choice of getting directions via the internet or my Google Maps app. The app functions similar to a GPS tool, such as a Garmin. While Apple has been chided for endlessly calling its devices "magical," few words are better to describe this iPad 2, which is one-third thinner, 15 percent lighter and twice as fast as the original.
It is simply the best vessel on which to casually consume content — an experience that has dropped users more completely and comfortably into the Web than any other device in history.
The iPad 2 now has front- and rear-facing cameras. The quality of the video camera is commendable although much less so in low-light conditions. Paired with Apple's new iMovie app ($4.99), the iPad 2 is an all-in-one video capturing and editing device.
The front-facing camera allows the iPad to join the suite of devices linked to FaceTime, Apple's video chatting software. Users can place video calls to other Apple devices, including the iPod Touch, iPhone and Mac computers. The FaceTime experience is slick and the quality of the video calls over WiFi is excellent.
Both the front- and rear-facing cameras on the iPad 2 allow users to take still photographs, but the quality on both is less than poor.

Apple also upgraded the iPad's Safari Web browser to make navigating around the Internet snappier. Pages load much faster than on the original iPad. Users of the original iPad should see a similar bump in speed when they upgrade to the new software version made available earlier this month.
One of the most exciting things about the iPad 2 is the innovative cover designed to protect it. It works seamlessly with the new tablet, snapping on and snapping closed using magnets. Opening the cover automatically turns the iPad 2 on, saving the few seconds that were required to wake up the previous version. When the cover retracts and folds up, it serves as a stand in two positions — one perfect for typing and one for watching video. The covers come in 10 versions ($39 to $69).

The iPad 2's only compelling competition, the Android-based Motorola Xoom, hit the market late last month without the features that were supposed to make it an iPad killer: support for Flash video, microSD cards and Verizon's next-generation 4G LTE wireless network. (All of those features are coming "soon," though, through software upgrades.) And it dropped with a gulp-worthy price tag: $800. Placed next to the iPad 2, the Xoom looks clunky and bloated. There is no better tablet on the market than the iPad 2.

Apple Will Be The Tablet King In 2013

Apple will remain firmly seated at the head of the table when it comes to the sale of tablet devices through 2012, according to new analyst estimates. Research firmDisplaySearch predicts Apple will continue to control the tablet market for at least the next two years, and the segment will continue to see rapid growth. But might Apple’s dominance in this space be of an even longer-lasting variety?
DisplaySearch estimates the iPad 2 will sell approximately 40 million units in 2011, which represents significant growth over the 15 million original iPads sold in the first year following its launch. That will be out of a total of 60 million tablet devices sold during all of 2012, which would mean competitors to Apple’s platform will gain little traction in 2012.
The research firm also predicts a massive explosion in tablet market growth by 2016, when it expects to see 260 million tablet devices shipped worldwide. Consider that 351 million PCs shipped in 2010, and by 2016, tablet sales may have cut into that number considerably, and we could see a market where tablets match or even exceed traditional PC sales.
DisplaySearch believes that beginning in around 2013, Apple’s tablet competitors will have finally have caught up to Apple and be nearing their sales volume (though that’s all competitor sales added up, not taken individually, so Apple will still be the dominant force in the market). While competitors may yet gain a significant foothold, I have to disagree with DisplaySearch’s assumption that the market will eventually open up as much as it predicts.
The research firm is laboring under the impression that the iPad’s growth trajectory will mirror that of the iPhone, but a more apt comparison is the iPod. As with its media player, Apple entered the tablet game when there was relatively little competition, and none that already had considerable market presence. The iPhone came into a cell phone market already rich with strong competitors, like Nokia and BlackBerry. The iPod still had a 73.9 percent share of the media player market in 2009, according to NPD. The iPad may have made some space for competitors in the most recent market share surveys, but it doesn’t follow that it will continue to cede ground at that rate.
Apple will win the tablet market for another two years, as DisplaySearch predicts, but don’t expect it to stop there. The iPad is a category-defining device, just like the iPod, and failing to account for that in any projections will lead to gross underestimations of its ability to continue to succeed.

One of the stories making the blog rounds today is a new report from research firm DisplaySearch, which claims that Apple will stave off emerging iPad competitors. The iPad will be king of the tablets until 2013 when they'll be overtaken by competitors.
A lot depends on not just how well competitors will do, but the access to supplies. As we reported last month, Apple is making sure the majority of touch screens currently being produced are being earmarked for the iPad.
While DisplaySearch thinks that iPad sales will mirror the iPhone, GigaOM believes that iPads will follow the iPod. Both the iPad and the iPod are category-defining devices, while the iPhone entered a market that's been around for years.
