HP TouchPad tablet get some tunes on the Beats Audio-powered

While HP's new TouchPad hits the same price points as the iPad 2 at $500 and $600 and looks remarkably similar, it runs a new operating system for tablets called WebOS very different from Google's Android and Apple's iOS.

The new software marks a shift for the company to try and control both the hardware and software of its machines, like Apple does, after years running Microsoft's Windows.

How does the TouchPad stack up against the rivals?

Well, it's all about the apps and HP doesn't have many of them yet compared to iPad, though it can run Flash so more websites work on it than on Apple's tablet. Websites like TV streaming site , for example, work on the TouchPad but don't work on the iPad. However, the issue is somewhat moot because there's an app for Hulu on the iPad.

HP hasn’t introduced the rumored music store and streaming service for its line of webOS devices, but it does have an application that currently syncs music to the HP TouchPad tablet and Veer smartphone. A beta version of HP Play is available for both Windows and OS X computers, and while it’s an early edition of the software, it worked well enough for me to get some tunes on the Beats Audio-powered TouchPad. And unlike early webOS media sync cat-and-mouse games, HP Play doesn’t try to fake out iTunes; instead, HP Play is built on the open-source Songbird software.

On the desktop, you can use the software to manage and listen to music, so it’s not limited solely to media syncing. Without a music store, however, HP Play is one-dimensional in what it can do for now. Some beta testers have reported sync issues, but I had no problems moving the tracks in my Purchased playlist; even while I was using the software to play other tracks. You can manually choose what to sync or setup an automatic synchronization.

While you could always manually move music to the TouchPad, HP Play offers a nice start to what I hope will be a useful tool for webOS device owners. Neither photos nor videos are supported yet, so there’s still work to be done. But I expect HP will get them added quickly, especially since the Pre 3, an upcoming webOS smartphone, will also be supported by HP Play. Ideally, some type of wireless syncing will be part of the solution as well; the days of using a USB cable to move data between devices is dying a slow painful death that can’t come soon enough.

Reinventing the laptop is often left to Apple, HP and other tech giants. But in 2009, a team of three Stanford University graduate students joined them in the ranks.
The Bloom is a recyclable laptop that can be disassembled without tools in less than 45 seconds. The Stanford students — Aaron Engel-Hall, Rohan Bhobe and Kirstin Gail — created the laptop in a graduate mechanical engineering course that challenged the students to address a real-world problem: e-waste. They were paired with four students from Aalto University in Finland to build the laptop. 3-D design software company Autodesk, the group’s sponsor, tasked the students with building a recyclable consumer electronic device.

After nine months of brainstorming, research and designing, the students completed the prototype. While conducting research, the team learned that most users don’t know how to recycle their laptops, Engel-Hall said, so it was important to design a laptop that made the process easy.

“The truth is that in any electronic device, there are some very hazardous materials if they’re not dealt with properly,” Engel-Hall said, “and many times will end up in landfills.”

E-waste is already an issue, and it will continue to worsen until 2015, when volume will peak at 73 million metric tons, according to Pike Research. Global volumes will decline in 2016 and beyond, however, as a number of key e-waste initiatives begin to turn the tide, the firm reports. And Bloom may play a role in solving the problem.

“Our goal for this laptop at the very beginning of the class was to alleviate e-waste as best we could,” said Engel-Hall, adding that the team chose to build a recyclable laptop because it posed the biggest challenge. “It was the most difficult device we could choose to make recyclable because it contains basically every ‘bad apple’ — every hazardous material and component that requires special handling to recycle than any other device has.”

Computer companies have shown interest in the laptop and its documentation, Engel-Hall said, but plans to manufacture it have not yet been made.

Parts like printed circuit boards, battery, hard drive and screen — which require special handling — can be inserted into a prepaid envelope that’s stored behind the laptop’s screen. The parts are sent to a facility that can properly recycle them.

Apple Store employees who have been sending in tips about ipad display

First of all, we’d like to thank all of the Apple Store employees who have been sending in tips over the past week on the new Store stuff.  Thank you and we hope to continue to hear from you guys (and gals!).  We’re hearing there is more to come.

We’re pasting without (much) editing some of the different tips we’ve gotten below:

1. As noted, the home button does not work when Smart Sign app is running so it cannot be exited. The only way to get the home button to work again is to reset the iPad using the home and lock buttons.
2. The Apple Store App will be updated tomorrow, and will be available world wide. It will support CTO orders, and should also be available as an iPad optimised app.
3. The Display iPads have a different model number than current iPad 2s.  There has been some concern about the cameras: Is Apple watching us from HQ?  Listening?  Customers?  Also, we’ve been told there is a bunch of security stuff on the new iPads.  If they leave the Store they keep calling home with their Wifi coordinates.
4. Apple is giving the old Pioneer tvs to one lucky Apple Employee per store. We had just upgraded all of them to new Sonys
5. The iPads are charged using a kind of tape, which goes from the cable which enters the plastic casing, to the dock connector (you can hardly see it!). This charges the iPad and alarms it – if it is removed, the alarm will sound.
6. There was some speculation about how the iPads are powered in the new display. They are connected via ribbon cables that hook into the dock connector. All the cables are custom made for each iPad, and also power the product they are advertising. All the content on the iPads is loaded from a server, nothing is stored locally except the custom application. The home buttons are disabled. We load them up, provision them to be signage iPads, boot the application, tell the iPad where in the store it’s located and that’s it. Apple can change prices and info live across all of retail
7. We have one of the smaller stores in the market and we received 100 iPad 2′s for the smart signs. The app that runs the information disables the home button on the iPad (obviously) and the image is all encompassing. If products move tables we won’t necessarily have to move smart signs just tell the iPads to display different product information. There is a specially designed flat ribbon cable that powers the iPad, no inductive charging or anything like that.

I’m not going to post the gesture combination unless it hits the web but it does exist and Store managers know it.

How to make your systems save when downloading the files to their computers

In the past few days since these scams surfaced, a number of MacFixIt readers have contacted us wondering about whether or not their systems are safe after having seen the site on their systems or even downloading the files to their computers. They want to know what they can do to check for and remove the malware.
What the recent malware does
If you have seen the "Apple Security Center" Web site and have clicked on the "Remove All" button, the site will download an installer file for malware that runs locally on your system. The program is distributed in several forms that so far have taken the names "Mac Defender," "Mac Security," and "Mac Protector." When installed it will run in the background and launch pornographic Web sites and other unwanted content, and show a fairly clean and crisp-looking scanner interface that will ask you to purchase  Acer extensa 5220 battery, Apple a1185 battery an upgrade.
If you provide your information to the program, you chance identity theft and charges to your credit cards.
Removing it!
Luckily the malware is fairly easy to remove, as it basically runs as a background process on your system that is launched by an action the user takes (logging in, etc.). If you have not installed any programs or opened any files downloaded from these sites, then you should be good to go and can just delete the downloaded files. If you have only visited the site and have not downloaded any files, then you do not need to do anything.
However, if you have opened the downloaded files and especially if you are seeing the malicious behaivor (unwanted pornographic sites randomly opening), or the scanner program launching and saying you have infected files, then you will need to check for and remove the program. To remove it, follow these steps:
Shut it down.
Open the Activity Monitor utility and perform a search for the malware (or browse through the list of running processes for it--sort by name to prevent the list from jumping around). The malware should be called "MacDefender," "MacSecurity," or "MacProtector" and will be running under the current user's name (see the "User" column of activity monitor). Reputable antivirus software for your system will be running under the user name "root" and will have required a full installation that required you to supply your administrator credentials.

With the malware selected in Activity Monitor, click the "Quit Process" button and confirm to quit it (use the force-quit option if it will not quit).

If you want to use the Terminal to do this, you can run the following command to kill the processes by name (the "sudo" portion may not be needed, but this will ensure the system can fully kill the running processes):
sudo killall macdefender macsecurity macprotector

1. Remove the program.
   Go to the /Applications folder and move the program to the trash (it should likewise be called "MacDefender," "Mac Security," or "Mac Protector"). Also locate the installer file (likely in your Downloads directory, or wherever you have Safari store downloaded items) and move it to the trash as well. When you have done this, empty the trash.
2. Remove references to the program.
   So far the program is launched at log-in by the system's "Login Items" feature. Go to the "Accounts" system preferences and choose your account name. Then go to the "Login Items" tab and remove any reference to the software from that list.

Ongoing protection
With the malware removed your system should be good to go; however, there is always the possibility that the malware will change in the future and adopt a new name or a new method of trying to trick users. Generally malware is more prevalent on underground, software piracy, and pornographic Web sites, but numerous people have reported the current Trojans showing up when browsing MSN and other reputable sites. Therefore, in order to better protect yourself you may need more than basic Internet "street smarts." To better protect your system, try some of the following suggestions:

1. Disable auto-handling of files
   Apple supplies a few options to automatically handle files, including the option in Safari to automatically open "Safe" files. Unfortunately the files that Safari considers to be "Safe" are not always so. Therefore, go to Safari's preferences and uncheck the option to open safe files.
2. Always manually install programs or open documentsIn addition to Safari, check your other Internet-based programs such as e-mail clients, chat programs, and Web browsers to see if they automatically launch files received from the Internet. For instance, Mail has an option to automatically add iCal invites to your calendars. Turn this feature off and manually click on any received invitations only after you have confirmed they are legitimate. 3. Install a reputable malware scanner.There are a number of reputable malware scanners out there, so purchase one, install it, and keep it updated with the latest malware definitions. Some of these scanners are free, and others are commercial products (this list is not complete):

   Know where your programs download files on your system. By default most will use the system's Downloads folder; however, some will place files in other locations on your system.

Protect your backups by excluding these download folders from them. This can be done in Time Machine's preferences or in the settings for a drive cloning utility if you use one.

Dell's upcoming Windows 7 tablet might not hit store shelves until fall

Dell's upcoming Windows 7 tablet might not hit store shelves until fall, a new report claims.

Citing an anonymous source, Forbes is reporting that Dell plans to launch its 10-inch Windows 7-based tablet as early as September.

Dell hasn't confirmed exactly when it might launch its Windows 7 tablet. When the company unveiled the device in February, it said that the tablet would hit store shelves by the middle of 2011. That announcement preceded a leak of Dell's reported "tablet roadmap," which indicated that the company could launch its Windows 7 tablet as early as mid-May. The roadmap also included mention of a Windows 8 tablet that could hit store shelves Touch Screen Monitors in the first quarter of 2012.

The PC maker declined to comment on Forbes' report.

According to Dell, its Windows 7 tablet is designed for those "who need greater mobility, as well as IT organizations that demand control, security, manageability, and integration with existing infrastructure investments." It will feature an Intel processor.

Dell also said in February that it plans to launch a 10-inch Android-based tablet as well, though it didn't provide many details on that device. The company currently sells the 5-inch and 7-inch Streak Tablet PCs. Both of those devices run Android.

Dell recently announced that it would launch a 10-inch tablet to compliment its 5- and 7-inch slates. However, it looks like we’ll have to wait a bit.

According to Forbes, the Windows 7-based tablet won’t be launched until “September at the earliest,” but a “Windows 8 tablet” could be on the way early next year too.

Depending on just how early the Windows 8 machine is shipped next year, that could be a small window for two tablet releases. Forbes points out that this unnamed Windows 7 tablet (which may or may not fall within the Streak family) could be intended for a holiday release.

A September debut would make sense if that were the case, but if this is truly a business-minded tablet (especially compared to the Streak tablets), then a big holiday Compaq nc6000 batteryblowout wouldn’t really make any sense. It’s more likely that Dell just needs more time to work on this tablet, which is fine if it turns out to be a stellar competitor for the HP Slate and similar gadgets. If it is a professional tablet, then it doesn’t have to go up against the slew of consumer tablets being launched this spring, such as Apple’s iPad 2, the LG G-Slate, and the HTC Evo View 4G.
