In a world of commoditised portables, it is nothing if not a unique product. Show it off to your friends; it looks like a netbook, and you pop open the laptop-like clamshell and wait for the bored expression to appear. Then comes the sucker punch: you rotate the screen horizontally within its frame and snap the laptop back shut. Ta-da, it's a freakin' tablet, bro! People are duly impressed. It's a neat trick and, at the very least, a clever feat of engineering.
But what is the Dell Inspiron Duo? Cut through the mystery and you will find -- sorry to burst your bubble -- a Windows netbook with a rotating touchscreen.
And that begs the question, what is it good for.
Well, we're still working on that one.
This is the problem with dual-function gadgets in general: They rarely do either of the things they're designed for very well. As a netbook, the Duo is at least passable. While it's heavier than other 10-inch netbooks by up to half a pound, it's well designed and looks good, and the 1366 x 768 screen's brightness is about average for the category. But performance is unfortunately poor all around (a 1.5GHz Atom doesn't get you very far), and the two measly USB ports could stand an upgrade.

As a tablet, the Duo fares considerably worse. Here, its three pounds of heft are way too much for extended use, and the clamshell design adds an uncomfortable thickness to the device that makes it hard to hold. The screen also suffers from the same poor viewing-angle problems that sunk the Streak 7. If you're not holding it dead on, the screen is virtually illegible.

Of course, the biggest problem here really isn't Dell's fault, it's that Windows just doesn't work very well for touchscreen devices, especially not on a small scale like this. Use the Duo in tablet mode for more than three minutes and your skin starts to crawl. You want to get something done quickly. You try to hit Control-C. Soon you find you're reaching over and over for a keyboard that isn't there. Except, of course, it is. Thank God for that.

It was kind of a treat for me because my favorite in-car stereo system when I was in my early teens had been a Pioneer floor mount cassette deck with auto-reverse. As such, the firm managed to earn quite a fond place in my heart.
Up until recently though, Pioneer hasn’t been at the top of their game and had to exit the TV business due to poor sales which is going to be problematic for them long term.

If I were to suggest a few years ago that folks might want to buy a $550 tablet as a remote control for a $550 receiver you’d have called me nuts.
Well, until you see this receiver, you might still call me nuts. 

Still, Pioneer has done an excellent job of creating an app that works with an iPhone or iPod Touch, but shines particularly with an iPad - by turning the receiver into an advanced music device.
From the iPad you can power up the unit, link multiple receivers and sync them to provide "whole house" audio via Apple’s AirPlay.
You can also configure the audio environment and even dynamically place yourself in it so that no matter where you sit you get perfect sound.
You can, of course, manage your audio and video sources - with a particular emphasis on sources that are DLNA complaint.
Setup is a virtual snap with a PC based (iPad version coming - though I thought the PC keyboardwas handy) dynamic manual which walks you step by step through each connection until you are done.
In effect, and I’m just skimming the surface here, you can turn your iPad into the most amazing remote control on the planet short of a $1,000 + custom unit.
And even some of these high end custom remote controls won’t do what the iPad can when connected to this receiver.Oh, and one more thing.
When you change the name on a remote control feature it changes on the remote itself.
Sure, most receivers have programmable remotes but virtually none in this price class have the ability to change the name on the button which can be rather frustrating if you don’t remember which button your changed.
This was guy heaven, if only for the few moments I got to play with the VSX-1021.
Other Features
The receiver is one of the first full featured HDMI 1.4 based products and, as a result, boasts some interesting new options on top of the expected 3D support.
For example, the VSX-1021 can pull audio off of the TV if you want to use it as a media source. 

And, as you would expect, the apps integrate with Pioneer’s new BluRay players making for a nice integrated solution.
But one of the coolest aspects: you don’t have to turn on the receiver to watch TV from a receiver connected source. 

It boasts passive pass through so the TV can see whatever the receiver was last connected to.

On some dell model laptops there has been a utility pre-installed called dell ISB, which prevents the laptop from using a third-party laptop battery. To remove the dell ISB utility follow these directions:dell laptop from wholesaleeshop.com.au
  • First remove the battery from the laptop and power on the system with just the ac adapter.
  • From either the Start menu or command prompt run MSCONFIG.exe
  • On Vista machines, Windows will prompt you for permission to continue
  • In the System Configuration window, click the "Startup" tab and find the item containing "ISBMgr.exe"
  • Uncheck the box for the "ISBMgr.exe"
  • Click "Ok" to save and accept the changes and restart the laptop
You may be prompted on restart that Windows is running in selective mode. Just uncheck the  notification option on bottom right,

This will remove the software check that dell has placed on laptops to prevent third-party laptop batteries from being used and allow you to use a non-dell laptop battery. If you perform a dell software update, you may need to repeat this procedure.
Some dell laptops have a hardware laptop battery lock which will prevent a third-party notebook battery from being used. We do have patches for certain models below. If your model is not listed, then there is no "fix" to get around the hardware lock and you will have to buy a genuine dell brandlaptop battery.
NOTE: BIOS updates should be performed with caution. To eliminate the possibility of other programs interfering with the update, shut down all other applications prior to running the BIOS update program. The update program will reboot on its own. Do not, under any circumstances, turn off the laptop or remove the ac adapter while update is installing. Doing so may cause the computer to become inoperable requiring repair.
