While examining various Apple notebooks, such as MacBook Airs, MacBook Pros, and MacBooks for their batteries, Miller discovered that the microcontroller chips inside the laptops contained default passwords, which if hacked could let malware purveyors intervene the system.
He stated that the batteries with default passwords were not constructed for anyone to muddle with them but it the functionalities of these components were truly vicious, as reported by PCWorld.
Further, Miller examined software update (2009), which Apple had utilized for rectifying an issue affecting MacBook batteries, and found passwords in the laptops that could help change the batteries. So when he succeeded in accessing them, he also succeeded in altering the chips' capability so they would display only those readings that favored him.
Besides during his experiments, Miller succeeded in blocking 7 batteries accounting for about $130 each. However, cyber-crooks who were able to load malware, which contaminated the laptop's other parts, found it easy to control the notebook's activities, steal data, or even take over it. Normally, an IT administrator would not imagine an infection in the firmware of the battery, so incase it is not detected, the computer could be repeatedly infected.

Sony Tablet S2 and the Sony Ericsson Xperia play support Wi-Fi connections

Sony’s split-screen Android device (which Sony insists is a tablet) will officially and exclusively launch in the U.S. via AT&T at an unspecified date later this year, in September at the earliest. The “Stealth Blue” version of the Sony Ericsson Xperia play, on the other hand, will be arriving also on AT&T “soon,” although not as an exclusive launch on the carrier, since Verizon beat AT&T to it last May.

The Sony Tablet S2 features two 5.5-inch screens (each one having a pixel resolution of 1024×480) in a foldable-book (clamshell) form factor and is intended for mobile communication and entertainment use. Sony’s other odd-shaped Android tablet, the Sony Tablet S1, is shaped like a folded newspaper/magazine and is intended for rich media entertainment. The shapes and designs of the two Android devices are undeniably unprecedented.

The two tablets come packed with Android 3.0 Honeycomb, according to reports, but will likely sport either Android 3.1 Honeycomb, or Android 3.2 Honeycomb when the final versions launch.

In contrast to the Sony Tablet S2, the Sony Ericsson Xperia play has been getting more interest from users, chiefly because it has great potential for hard-core gaming, being a PlayStation Phone. The 4-inch gaming phone will have Android 2.3 Gingerbread running on top of a 1-GHz Qualcomm mobile processor.

Both the Sony Tablet S2 and the Sony Ericsson Xperia play are capable of using AT&T’s 4G HSPA+ network. Both devices also support Wi-Fi connections.

Sony's Vaio Z Laptop will be a category killer

For business travellers who want a slim and light laptop with desktop-grade power and features, Sony's Vaio Z could be the dream machine.

With a chassis manufactured from carbon fibre rather than plastic or metal, this sleek 13.3" notebook weighs in at only 1.2kg. It's only 16.7mm thin -- less than the height of two iPhone 4s stacked on top of each other -- yet it runs on a full-speed Intel Core i7 processor.

Here are the six reasons we think this notebook will be a 'category killer' when it's released in Australia. (And before you ask: Sony Australia hasn't announced the local availability date or price, but we know they've already been demonstrating the laptop to many companies in Australia so it can't be far off.)

1. Thunderbolt media dock

The Vaio Z includes the new Thunderbolt port which provides a high-speed link between the laptop and external devices. The difference between Thunderbolt and the common USB 2.0 ports is like comparing an autobahn to a suburban street.

Sony will offer an optional Vaio Z "Power Media Dock 2" which uses Thunderbolt to turn the laptop into a powerful desktop-grade PC.

The dock includes a high-speed AMD Radeon HD graphics card which takes over from the notebook's integrated Intel graphics for heavy-duty work such as CAD and multimedia applications (as well as some serious gaming during your downtime). There's also your choice of a DVD burner or a Blu-Ray drive plus extra HDMI and USB  ports.

2. Optional second battery for 14 hours battery life

On top of the Vaio's claimed seven hour battery life, you can buy an optional slim 'sheet' battery which Sony says will double the Vaio's battery life to 14 hours on a single charge – long enough to work non-stop on a flight from Australia to the US.

Given how much notebook companies typically inflate battery-life claims we'd suggest the inbuilt and second battery are more likely to deliver around five hours each (especially if you're using wi-fi) so this will be the first thing Australian Business Traveller tests when we get our hands on a Vaio Z.

Another boon for travellers is that the sheet battery sits under the laptop rather than being a bolt-on lump at the back. It can also be charged separately from the notebook, and fitted without having to remove the internal battery or turn the machine off.

3. Intel Core i7 processor

Forget about low-voltage processors which trade high performance for longer battery life. Sony's rationale was that with battery life already at seven hours there was no reason not to go for a full-speed Intel Core i7 processor.

This means performance of the machine will be extremely snappy -- as good as a full-size 15" notebook.

It's a testament to Sony's engineering prowess, too, because these chips usually produce too much heat for a slimnotebook to vent effectively. Sony says it is using two fans to keep the system cool.

4. SSD storage

Sony has ditched slow mechanical hard drives, which are a serious performance bottleneck, for lightning-fast solid state disks (SSDs).

These use a supercharged type of flash memory -- a cousin of what's in digital camera memory cards and on USB memory sticks.

In fact, the Vaio Z packs two SSD modules which are used simultaneously to ensure even faster speed than a single drive can provide. The Vaio Z can be ordered with up to 256GB of SSD storage.

HP's webOS could find footing among OEM partners

Samsung, Motorola and other makers of high-end Android smartphones have become frustrated enough with Google's  mobile operating system that it might open the door for another mobile platform player: HP's webOS.
Samsung, HTC and Motorola are the leading Android smartphone makers, with all three enjoying market share gainsversus Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone and RIM's (NASDAQ:RIMM) Blackberry devices in the past two years.
However, the advent of low-cost Android devices may be gradually changing the sentiment of good will toward Android.

Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdry said Motorola, Samsung and Sony are starting to feel that their premium handsets and tablets have little-to-no differentiation in the eyes of the customer against $20 Android phones from Huawei, or $150 tablets from ZTE.
These vendors further fear that Android and its gross fragmentation across multiple OS versions, carriers and devices may dilute their global brand.
Sony, Motorola and Samsung are "extremely worried" that customers are beginning to pick devices based on Apple's iOS instead of their Android phones and tablets, Chowdry said.
"As things stand today, Android has probably peaked, and probably will start showing slow and gradual decline," Chowdry added.
This opens the door for HP, whose CEO Leo Apotheker has said the company might be amenable to licensing webOS to these handset and tablet makers.

WebOS would enable only two or three reference designs for only three or four OEM partners to limit the fragmentation that exists within the Android ecosystem, Chowdry suggested.
The analyst believes HP could license webOS for somewhere in the range of $50 to $75 per OEM smartphone or tablet, enabling the company and OEMs partners such as Samsung, Motorola and Sony to drive their premium brand at the expense of low-cost rivals such as Huawei and ZTE.
Moreover, since webOS is not free, the customer may be willing to pay for applications, making HP potentially a more viable OS option than Android to Apple iOS and the popular App Store.
However, tech analysts believe Chowdry's scenarios are unlikely, citing Samsung's strong commitments to Android on smartphones and Android 3.0 "Honeycomb" tablets, among other factors.
"While anything is possible with Samsung (they seem to do one of everything ever made), it's unlikely HP would be that anxious to license WebOS, and it's less likely that Samsung would want it without having a significant ecosystem in place to promote it (e.g., lots of apps and user demand)," industry analyst Jack Gold told eWEEK in an email.
Gold added that he doesn't see WebOS making it as a general Android OS replacement for vendors other than HP, which will, no doubt, push WebOS as being superior to Honeycomb.
IDC analyst Al Hilwa said there would be interest in an alternative to Android or Windows from other OEMs, but the value proposition has to be clearly defined.
"The key question for the platform owner is how to maintain a unified personality for the platform without allowing OEMs to fragment it with their own user interfaces and application frameworks," said Hilwa. "My guess is some will be willing to look at an alternative, but it is hard to get the formula right."

Not one to let the earth's rotation get in the way of a good lunar eclipse, Google will offer several ways to watch today's total lunar eclipse live over the Internet. 
The earth will shield the sun's rays from the moon starting at 11:20 a.m. Pacific time on Wednesday. The total lunar eclipse will be visible from Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe and South America, meaning that folks in North America won't get to see the eclipse first-hand -- including Google. The search giant is partnering with Slooh Space Camera to help everyone catch a glimpse.
The simplest way to watch the eclipse is to visit YouTube's Google channel, which will host a live feed later today. For a more elaborate set-up, check out Slooh's mission interface powered by Google Apps. It allows you to see images of the eclipse from multiple angles and listen to audio narrations, and Slooh members will be able to take high-resolution screenshots. Android phone owners can download Slooh's Space Camera app, which offers a similar experience to the desktop mission interface.
Google has used the moon to showcase the company's service before. In 2009, Google added a complete map of the moon to Google Earth, and last year Google Earth hosted live camera images from Slooh during another total lunar eclipse. This is the first time an Android app has been available for the occasion, and it will also be the first eclipse live feed on YouTube.
But Google's fascination with space isn't always tied to a specific product. In 2007, the company pledged $30 million to anyone who could land a private spacecraft on the moon. The prize remains unclaimed.
I am beginning to think that Google should put its doodlers in charge of the whole company.
It seems as if they have an instinct for inspiring real, normal people that has sometimes seemed lacking in some of the titular higher-ups.
So today, as we await the full effects of a lunar eclipse that will provide us with some welcome pause for thought, Google has created a doodle on its home page that shows the progress of the moon as it becomes darkened because the earth is blocking the path of the sun's rays.
Just as with the marvelous Les Paul effort last week, this doodle not only shows you the moon's movement, but allows you to move a dial as far backwards and forwards as you like in order to observe whichever minute detail takes your fancy.

RIM’s first touch screen BlackBerry, the Storm, is also the first RIM smartphone to run BlackBerry operating system (OS) version 4.7, which incorporates a wide variety of new, touch-based keyboard and device shortcuts, as well as gesture-based navigation methods.
I haven’t put down the Storm 9530 from Verizon Wireless since I first laid my thumbs on it last week, and though it took a bit of time, I’ve uncovered and mastered some great new BlackBerry Storm tips and tricks, including new ways to type special characters; fresh scrolling techniques; click-free message searches; precise text navigation; and an easy way to delete multiple messages in one fell swoop.

Pre-4.7 versions of the BlackBerry handheld OS are jam-packed with valuable shortcuts and other tips and tricks, the majority of which I’ve covered in my BlackBerry Tips of the Week, so I won’t focus on the shortcuts already available within previous version of the BlackBerry OS. Each and every one of the following 20 BlackBerry Storm shortcuts, though perhaps present in another BlackBerry OS, somehow incorporates the Storm’s new SurePress touch screen.

So sit back, relax, fire up that Storm and get ready to become a whole lot more familiar with RIM’s latest addition to the BlackBerry family.

On Key: BlackBerry Storm Keyboard Shortcuts

?The BlackBerry Storm is touch-screen-based, and as such, it lacks a physical keyboard; however, three types of on-screen, virtual keyboards are available to users: 1) RIM’s SureType keyboard, which is a QWERTY keyboard with more than one letter/number on each key (available only in portrait mode); a multitap keyboard that resembles the keys on a traditional cell phone (portrait mode); and a full QWERTY like the one found on your computer(Acer as07b42 battery,Acer batbl50l6 battery) keyboard (landscape mode only).

To switch back and forth between keyboards in portrait mode, simply click the BlackBerry Menu key whenever a keyboard is displayed, and click “Enable Multitap” or “Enable SureType.”

-To quickly bring up the Storm’s onscreen keyboard, swipe a finger upward from the very bottom of the screen to the middle.

-To quickly hide the Storm’s keyboard, swipe a finger downward from the top of the keyboard to the very bottom of the device’s screen.

-Accented, or “special,” characters can be typed via Storm in both portrait (vertical) and landscape (horizontal) views. To enter in a special character while in portrait or landscape mode, such as an ï, bring up the on-screen keyboard, depress the “i” key–but don’t click it–and a number of options appear on screen, one of which is ï. To choose that character, simply click it on screen.

–To activate number lock, bring up the onscreen keyboard and then hold down the “123″ key for about two seconds until a lock appears on that button. The number pad will then stay on screen until you either hide it or tap the “123″ key again to return to the normal keyboard layout.

–To activate capital lock, bring up the onscreen keyboard and then hold down the “Shift/Arrow Up” key for about two seconds until a lock appears on that button. The number pad will then stay on screen until you either hide it or tap the “Shift/Arrow Up” key again to return to the normal keyboard layout.

-To change text input languages, hold the Storm in landscape mode, bring up the virtual keyboard and click the “Globe” key found directly to the left of the Space key. Next, scroll to the desired language, highlight it and click the Storm’s screen to select.

Finding Your Way Around the Storm: Navigation Tips and Tricks

-To scroll downward in a message or while viewing a Web page, place your finger lightly at the bottom of the screen–but don’t click–and drag upward. To scroll down a full screen’s length, slide your finger up rapidly.

- To scroll up, place your finger lightly at the top of the screen–but don’t click–and drag it down. To scroll up a full screen’s length, slide your finger down rapidly.

-To zoom in on a picture or a Web page, tap the screen lightly twice–but don’t click it. (The BlackBerry browser also has zoom in/out options; two separate magnifying glasses for zooming in and out sit at the bottom of the browser screen.) To zoom back out after zooming in, click the BlackBerry Escape key until you return to the original view.

-To “pan,” or move around while viewing a web page, hold your finger on the display–but again, don’t click–and drag it in the direction you wish to move.

-To quickly switch between active applications from the Storm home screen, hold the BlackBerry Menu key until the Application Switch ribbon appears on screen. Then lightly touch the ribbon and move back and forth to scroll between available apps. To select one, click the Touch Screen,LCD Monitors when a specific app is highlighted.

-To jump from the Storm home screen to the main icon screen, put your finger on the home screen, just above the app dock, and click once. (You can also simply hit the BlackBerry Menu key while on the home screen to access your icon page.)

Text and Messaging Shortcuts for the Storm

-To copy and paste text from one location to another, lightly touch a finger to the Storm’s screen at the start of the text you wish to copy. Then hold that first finger in place while you touch the end of the text with another finger. The text in between your digits will then be selected. To copy it, click the BlackBerry Menu key, scroll to “Copy” and click the screen. To paste, follow the same instructions but pick “Paste” instead of “Copy.”

-To quickly search your messages for all mailings from a specific contact, find a message from that contact in your Messages application and then gently hold a finger on screen directly over the contact’s name. After a few seconds, all messages from that contact appear on screen.

- To quickly search your messages for a specific subject line, or to track a thread, find a message with the desired subject line in your Messages application and then gently hold a finger on screen directly over the subject line. After a few seconds, all messages with that specific subject appear on screen.

-To precisely navigate to the middle of a sentence, or even a specific word, while typing on the Storm, gently press your finger on the Storm’s screen on or around the text or character you wish to edit. Then, with your finger on the display, but not clicking it, slide your finger around until it’s exactly where you want it and then let go. The specific character or set of characters will then be highlighted for easy editing.

Can RIM's PlayBook overtake the iPad 2 and Android 3.0?

Exasperated that despite its successes, RIM and BlackBerry are still having to prove that it is relevant and has potential in today’s environment.

Lazaridis speaks of a “negative sentiment” towards RIM, asking multiple questions:

“Why is it that people don’t appreciate our profits? Why is it that people don’t appreciate our growth? Why is it that people don’t appreciate the fact that we spent the last four years going global?"

But wait, there's more: "Why is it that people don’t appreciate Acer as07a31 batteries that we have 500 carriers in 170 countries with products in almost 30 languages?”

That sounds like a man feeling underappreciated doesn’t it? RIM is successful, no one's saying it isn't Mike, so chill.

BlackBerry smartphones have been consistently near the top of phone sales, particularly the likes of the BlackBerry Curve, for example.

On the surface, it would appear that BlackBerry has managed to at least partially shift the “business-specific” tag that it has had for many years.

Many of its users are a lot younger these days, for instance, with features like BlackBerry Messenger appealing to the social media Asus a42-v6 battery generation.

RIM is poised to build on this growing consumer-love as well, the PlayBook will be squarely aimed at both comsumers and city-types evenly.

So what is the problem?

The issue that many people have with BlackBerry is that it appears to be losing ground with the other major players.

Apple has revolutionised the way people use mobile phones – and Android has grown to become the biggest mobile operating system. Between these two big dogs, there ain't much left.

BlackBerry, as well as Nokia, is in a state of flux. Both have kept to what they know without pushing many boundaries. All the while, companies that are willing to change, such as Samsung and LG, are showing signs of heading out in front.

It isn’t necessarily a case of BlackBerry being unsuccessful, it is more the case that while other platforms are growing, RIM and BlackBerry is dropping.

Basically, a big overhaul in the way RIM makes phones and operating systems is what's needed – i.e. some fresh thinking.

QNX is the way forward

This is where RIM's ace-in-the-sleeve comes into play: the new QNX operating system.

RIM acquired QNX and has quickly turned around a tablet-specific operating system. One that will debut on its PlayBook – due out soon.

And this is doubley important as it is the operating system that is fast becoming on of the biggest factors for consumers when they're making a decision about what device to get next.

This means more than just the hardware that the phone or tablet has, but the apps, services and UI as well. This is where QNX comes in.

It has been confirmed by RIM that BlackBerry phones will see the QNX operating system in the near future. The BlackBerry OS at the moment has been around for years. It is fairly outdated, and does not have the range of apps that Apple and Android do.

The reason why BlackBerry lags behind the “big two” in terms of apps is down to developing possibilities. Apps for BlackBerry are more expensive and complex to develop.

The New York Times provides an example of this problem.

Jason Schwartz, the developer of a bar and restaurant app called Matchbook, undertook some market research when building his app. He discovered from that research that his app was most suitable for female BlackBerry users.

Yet, the app is not available from BlackBerry App World, only from Apple’s App Store.

The reason? Mr. Schwartz told the New York Times, “The experience with Apple is very easy. With R.I.M., I wouldn’t even know where to begin”.

On some dell model laptops there has been a utility pre-installed called dell ISB, which prevents the laptop from using a third-party laptop battery. To remove the dell ISB utility follow these directions:

• First remove the battery from the laptop and power on the system with just the ac adapter.

• From either the Start menu or command prompt run MSCONFIG.exe

• On Vista machines, Windows will prompt you for permission to continue

• In the System Configuration window, click the "Startup" tab and find the item containing "ISBMgr.exe"

• Uncheck the box for the "ISBMgr.exe"

• Click "Ok" to save and accept the changes and restart the laptop

You may be prompted on restart that Windows is running in selective mode. Just uncheck the  notification option on bottom right,

This will remove the software check that dell has placed on laptops to prevent third-party laptop batteries from being used and allow you to use a non-dell laptop battery. If you perform a dell software update, you may need to repeat this procedure.
Some dell laptops have a hardware laptop battery lock which will prevent a third-party notebook battery from being used. We do have patches for certain models below. If your model is not listed, then there is no "fix" to get around the hardware lock and you will have to buy a genuine dell brandlaptop battery.
NOTE: BIOS updates should be performed with caution. To eliminate the possibility of other programs interfering with the update, shut down all other applications prior to running the BIOS update program. The update program will reboot on its own. Do not, under any circumstances, turn off the laptop or remove the ac adapter while update is installing. Doing so may cause the computer to become inoperable requiring repair.
