Lenovo claims its Android tablets are the first certified for Netflix

Lenovo is plunging into the tablet market with three new devices that run Google Android and Windows 7.
Unlike other tablet manufacturers, which seem dedicated to challenging the Apple iPad with devices aimed primarily at the consumer market, Lenovo seems keen on tailoring its offerings to both the consumer and business spheres.
Lenovo's tablets include the IdeaPad Tablet P1, which features a 1.5GHz Intel processor powering Windows 7, and the IdeaPad Tablet K1, whose dual-core 1GHz processor from Nvidia supports Google Android 3.1. Both 10.1-inch devices are aimed at consumers, although Lenovo is also positioning the P1 as a business tool. The K1 includes some 40 preloaded apps, including Amazon's Kindle app and Documents To Go, along with a proprietary social-networking app called SocialTouch.

While the upcoming Windows 8 is expected to be fully optimized for the tablet form factor (and support system-on-a-chip architecture, in particular ARM-based systems), Windows 7 does not have a substantial presence in the U.S. tablet market, despite its support for touch screens. That being said, some business users who need Windows to the exclusion of other systems, and who want a relatively lightweight tablet, could gravitate to such an offering.
Lenovo's third device is a 10.1-inch ThinkPad tablet, also powered by an Nvidia dual-core 1GHz processor, which runs Google Android 3.1. The ThinkPad offers front and rear cameras (2 megapixels and 5 megapixels, respectively), an optional keyboard dock and 8 hours' battery life.

In a bid to appeal to consumer audiences, Lenovo claims its Android tablets are the first certified for Netflix, which could possibly sway some cinephiles who use the devices primarily as portable entertainment hubs. The K1 and the ThinkPad can access Android Market and Lenovo's App Shop, which is billed as an online storefront for applications tested specifically for those tablets.
But Lenovo's always had its center of gravity in the business realm, and its tablets' other features seem tailor-made for beleaguered IT administrators struggling to integrate the touch-screen devices more seamlessly into their company's daily workflow. The ThinkPad offers layered data security, for example, coupled with business partner solutions such as anti-theft software and Citrix's virtual application support. The IdeaPad P1 comes with Microsoft Security Essentials,
Unlike other tablets on the market, Lenovo is also emphasizing the optional use of a stylus—referred to as a “digitizer pen”—as an input. The company is pricing the 16GB ThinkPad at $509 with the pen (and $479 without); the 32GB, WiFi-only ThinkPad with pen will retail for $589. All variations of the device will apparently hit U.S. store shelves sometime in August.
The 32GB IdeaPad Tablet K1 will retail for $499 and also be generally available in the United States in August. The IdeaPad Tablet P1 will reach market sometime in the fourth quarter.

3D mapping software will be made by Microsoft, Google, and AOL

Microsoft, Google, and AOL are the subjects of a lawsuit from a company that claims the three defendants violated the patents of its 3D mapping software. Bloomberg reports that Transcenic filed the lawsuit earlier this week. The lawsuit states that the 3D software used in all three companies' street mapping services "has injured Transcenic and Transcenic is entitled to recover damages adequate to compensate for such infringement."
Google's popular Street View feature for its Map division is involved in the lawsuit along with Microsoft's Streetwise business and AOL's MapQuest division. The Lake Charles, Louisiana-based Transcenic company claims that all three companies used 3D mapping software to show its users where to go. The company claims that the software "misappropriated technology" from Transcenic. The company itself is privately owned and doesn't even appear to have its own web site. So far spokespersons for Google and Microsoft have not yet commented on the lawsuit, according to the article. AOL did not yet respond to an inquiry.
In related news. Wired.com reports that Google lost a court battle earlier this week dealing with its Street View feature. Lawsuits filed last year claimed that Google's use of vehicles to help create the Street View images "... were equipped with WiFi sniffing hardware to record the names and MAC addresses of routers to improve Google location-specific services." A judge agreed that such actions also secretly took info from people's WiFi networks and that Google can be held liable for any damages. Google has said that the use of its Street View vehicles in that way was a "mistake' and that any info taken from WiFi networks has not yet been viewed by Google.
Yay another patent troll out for some free cash, by being privately owned and not even having a website they're not actively using there patents so morally should be declared null and void
Software Patents are perfectly legitimate & a good use of the legal system, no, not a waste of time and a waste of money into the lawyers' pockets at all.

Google will offer several ways to watch today's total lunar eclipse live

Not one to let the earth's rotation get in the way of a good lunar eclipse, Google will offer several ways to watch today's total lunar eclipse live over the Internet. Google Will Live Feed Lunar Eclipse
The earth will shield the sun's rays from the moon starting at 11:20 a.m. Pacific time on Wednesday. The total lunar eclipse will be visible from Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe and South America, meaning that folks in North America won't get to see the eclipse first-hand -- including Google. The search giant is partnering with Slooh Space Camera to help everyone catch a glimpse.
The simplest way to watch the eclipse is to visit YouTube's Google channel, which will host a live feed later today. For a more elaborate set-up, check out Slooh's mission interface powered by Google Apps. It allows you to see images of the eclipse from multiple angles and listen to audio narrations, and Slooh members will be able to take high-resolution screenshots. Android phone owners can download Slooh's Space Camera app, which offers a similar experience to the desktop mission interface.
Google has used the moon to showcase the company's service before. In 2009, Google added a complete map of the moon to Google Earth, and last year Google Earth hosted live camera images from Slooh during another total lunar eclipse. This is the first time an Android app has been available for the occasion, and it will also be the first eclipse live feed on YouTube.
But Google's fascination with space isn't always tied to a specific product. In 2007, the company pledged $30 million to anyone who could land a private spacecraft on the moon. The prize remains unclaimed.
I am beginning to think that Google should put its doodlers in charge of the whole company.
It seems as if they have an instinct for inspiring real, normal people that has sometimes seemed lacking in some of the titular higher-ups.
So today, as we await the full effects of a lunar eclipse that will provide us with some welcome pause for thought, Google has created a doodle on its home page that shows the progress of the moon as it becomes darkened because the earth is blocking the path of the sun's rays.
Just as with the marvelous Les Paul effort last week, this doodle not only shows you the moon's movement, but allows you to move a dial as far backwards and forwards as you like in order to observe whichever minute detail takes your fancy.

Google will enable IPv6 for its main websites including google.com

Web giants including Facebook and Google are braced for a major test tomorrow of new technology designed to allow the internet to continue growing after current systems reach their capacity.
But the internet is not ready. It’s hoped the 24-hour World IPv6 Day test will help concentrate minds at network operators, as a small percentage of users may be unable to reach their favourite websites.
The huge experiment is being run because the Internet Protocol itself – the fundamental set of rules that allows data to be transmitted the internet – is due to be updated from IPv4 to IPv6.
The change is required because IPv4 offers a limited and rapidly dwindling supply of IP addresses, the identifying numbers which are allocated to each computer or network connected to the internet. There are only 4.3 billion IPv4 addresses, compared to 340 trillion trillion trillion IPv6 addresses.
“It's as if the internet was originally designed with a limited number of telephone numbers, and we're soon going to run out,” Vint Cerf, a member of the team that built the forerunner of the internet, explained in January.
The new system should have more than enough capacity to serve existing demand in booming economies like China, and to foster future internet technologies worldwide..

The problem is that IPv4 and IPv6 communications are not compatible with each other: a home PC connected via IPv4 cannot access an IPv6 wevbsite, for example. So network operators need to make technical preparations to ensure users can access websites and other services via either. Some have not, however.
“In all likelihood, you won’t even notice the test,” Google assured users.
“The vast majority (99.95 per cent) of people will be able to access services without interruption: either they’ll connect over IPv6, or their systems will successfully fall back to IPv4."
But it warned there may be problems for a few tomorrow.
“However, as with any next-generation technology, there may be teething pains. We estimate that .05 per cent of systems may fail to fall back to IPv4, so some people may find Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Bing and other participating websites slow or unresponsive on World IPv6 Day.”
Google will enable IPv6 for its main websites including google.com and youtube.com, so that they are accessible via both IPv6 and IPv4, and has provided a page for users to test whether they are likely to experience problems.

Google and Yahoo have worked together to create schema.org

It is not every day of the week that you see fierce competitors team up to create a unified project. But exactly that has happened as Bing, Google and Yahoo have worked together to create schema.org.
Schema.org is a new site intended to help site owners with using a common set of schemas. This new initiative is "aimed at creating and supporting a common set of schemas for structured data markup on Web pages." The search giants worked together to create a one-stop shop for website owners and developers. Microsoft states:
Schema.org will become a one-stop shop for site owners and developers, providing the tips and tools necessary to help improve how their sites appear in search results on Bing, Google and Yahoo! It will also help search engines better understand websites, and moving forward, Bing will work jointly with the larger Web community and its search partners to extend the available schema categories. Consumers will also benefit from this effort by experiencing richer search experiences and content from a much broader set of publishers.
While this new initiative is definitely for the technical user, it should help to create a more unified playing field now that Google, Bing, and Yahoo are all onboard. The goal is to help site owners and developers improve how their sites appear in search results.
The collaboration is a positive sign that even though Google and Bing are fighting for marketshare, they are able to put aside differences to help out the average consumer.

  • Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo collectively announced that they will be partnering to create schema.org, a resource for site owners and developers to learn about structured data and gain insight into how to improve their site’s search results. The site adds more than 100 new forms of website markup for content ranging from movies to places in an effort to standardize, and thus improve, how websites are crawled and presented in search results. “The site aims to be a one stop resource for webmasters looking to add markup to their pages”, Google’s announcement reads.
Essentially, the site will provide a collection of schemas, or HTML tags, webmasters can add to their pages to make it easy for the major search providers to recognize their sites. to markup their pages in ways recognized by major search providers. Search engines including Bing, Google and Yahoo! rely on this markup to improve the display of search results, making it easier for people to find the right web pages.

Google will let developers create Android apps for the living room

Google TV is nothing if not creative. Consider this recent patent filing, "Displaying Advertisements on Blank Television Output," from Simon Rowe, Google TV tech lead in the U.K. Rowe sees an opportunity to deliver advertising during the gap of one to ten seconds when channels are changing--advertising that capitalizes on channel surfing.
But Google TV has been too much, too soon--and it's a warning for any company trying to convert its success in one market to another. Google mastered rapid innovation in the cloud. The company's executives, product managers, and engineers talk about speed and innovation constantly. They love to cite the number of features added to the company's online services--more than 130 just to Google Docs last year, for example. But Google still has something to learn about speed limits, quality control, and the cat herding that's otherwise known as working with hardware makers, content partners, and developers. Speed matters, but so too does execution. And when it comes to delivering the ecosystem needed around hardware like Google TV, Google's approach of "beta now and improve it later" hasn't cut it.
Google so far has failed to deliver the software that promises to make Google TV really interesting: Its Android SDK for Google TV. The SDK is likely to be introduced at the company's developer conference in May, but it should have been ready Dell inspiron 5160 battery,Dell inspiron 600m battery in October last year when Google TV launched.
Incompleteness is a problem that goes beyond the Google TV-specific Android SDK and afflicts all of Android. As Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry observed in a recent research report, the view among some 150 Android developers that his firm surveyed is that "Honeycomb," the tablet-specific version of Android, is "dead on arrival" because it's buggy, incomplete, and plagued by a poor user interface.
What's more, Google TV depends on hardware and, so far, Google's hardware partners haven't managed to make up for the unfinished software. Sony has said sales of its interpretation of Google TV, known as Sony Internet TV, haven't been as good as anticipated. Logitech has said as much about its Google TV companion box, the Logitech Revue. "To date the [Google TV] platform has not met widespread consumer acceptance, and our sales of Logitech Revue and related products have been below our expectations," the company said in a financial report in February, though it expects the situation to get better as features and functionality are improved.
Browse through the Logitech Revue support forums and the dissatisfaction is evident. Consumers don't like half-baked products. Google essentially acknowledged this in March when it decided to delay releasing the open-source code for Android 3.0, Honeycomb. Google explained its decision by noting that it has more work to before its code is ready. It doesn't need poor hardware reviews killing the Android buzz.
Google also brought Google TV to market without enough supportive content providers. Either spooked that Google TV might encourage cable account cancellation or resentful that they weren't been courted with sufficient cash, ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, and Viacom blocked Google TV users from using the Google TV Chrome browser to access the shows they already were making available on the Internet. Google appears to have learned something from this; the company is said to be ready to announce a streaming video rental service through YouTube, with partners that will provide content rather than obstruct it.
"Content owners were not happy with the Google TV approach and held back their content," said Al Hilwa, program director of applications development software for IDC, via email. "I suspect this is at least in part what is behind taking YouTube to a higher value video store with rentals, for example. Google will need to work out deals with content providers as well as improve the user experience and the application development model to get a device Dell inspiron 6400 battery,Dell inspiron 640m laptop battery like [Google TV] to the next level."
    Small Living Room Design
Google may have revolutionized software development with its online approach. Its release-early-and-often approach has forced Adobe, Microsoft, and Mozilla, among others, to re-evaluate software development cycles that used Dell inspiron 9300 battery to drag on for years. But the search company has to think more carefully about balancing speed with the realities of marketing, particularly when physical products are involved.
