While examining various Apple notebooks, such as MacBook Airs, MacBook Pros, and MacBooks for their batteries, Miller discovered that the microcontroller chips inside the laptops contained default passwords, which if hacked could let malware purveyors intervene the system.
He stated that the batteries with default passwords were not constructed for anyone to muddle with them but it the functionalities of these components were truly vicious, as reported by PCWorld.
Further, Miller examined software update (2009), which Apple had utilized for rectifying an issue affecting MacBook batteries, and found passwords in the laptops that could help change the batteries. So when he succeeded in accessing them, he also succeeded in altering the chips' capability so they would display only those readings that favored him.
Besides during his experiments, Miller succeeded in blocking 7 batteries accounting for about $130 each. However, cyber-crooks who were able to load malware, which contaminated the laptop's other parts, found it easy to control the notebook's activities, steal data, or even take over it. Normally, an IT administrator would not imagine an infection in the firmware of the battery, so incase it is not detected, the computer could be repeatedly infected.

Useful Tips to Refresh Your Laptop

Do you have an aging laptop that you want to save from the recycling center? With a few software and hardware upgrades, you could bring that old notebook back to life and possibly avoid having to plunk down cash for a new laptop or a secondary device such as an Apple iPad or an Android tablet.

Refresh the Operating System: Three Options

Back up first! Before making any operating system changes, be sure to back up your data to an external hard drive (or two), and confirm that you have all of your application discs handy so that you can reinstall them. Check our tips on what you should back up, as well as on how to back up manually or through Windows.
1. Reinstall Windows: Over time, Windows naturally slows down. A fast way to bring your laptop back to square one is to use your system-restore disc (or the restore program installed on the laptop) to reformat and reinstall Windows. After a fresh install, your system will run much faster, undoing the years of application installs and uninstalls, disk fragmentation, and everyday wear and tear. See oureight-step complete guide to reinstalling and restoring Windows for assistance in starting over from scratch.
Unfortunately, reinstalling Windows from your laptop manufacturer's restore disc or program will also reinstall any bloatware that initially came with it. A few utilities can help you remove those useless programs: Previously we've mentioned Revo Uninstaller Portable, which is free and doesn't need to be installed on your laptop, as well as Total Uninstall ($30), which has more features, handles uninstalls that require a reboot, and can remove 64-bit programs. If you want a more automatic tool that finds bloatware for you, check out the free PC Decrapifier.
2. Upgrade to Windows 7: If you're running Windows XP or Vista, you may find much better performance under Windows 7--if your laptop meets the requirements for upgrading. Download and install Microsoft's Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to determine whether your laptop can run Windows 7.
At Microsoft's suggested retail price of $120 for the OS upgrade, this option isn't cheap. If you intend to use your old laptop as just a secondary computer, the investment might not pay off. But if you'll be using the laptop heavily, keep in mind that Windows 7 has been shown to run well on even very old and underpowered laptops and netbooks, and that it boasts a ton of nice features for connecting to other computers, finding your documents and other files, and using your laptop in general.
Want to upgrade? Check out our instructions for upgrading to Windows 7, including how to perform the custom (that is, clean) install required for XP users, as well as the upgrade path for Vista.
3. Try Linux: For a free, lightweight, and secure operating system upgrade, consider trying Linux, specifically Puppy Linux. My PCWorld colleague Katherine Noyes pointed out several features of Puppy Linuxthat make it a nice option for older PCs, including its ability to run off a CD or USB flash drive, as well as its small footprint. It boots quickly, too.

Easy Hardware Upgrades: Three Options

1. Add memory: The easiest, and often the most cost-effective, way to add a performance boost is to install more RAM. If your laptop has 512MB or less of memory, you can boost its speed by a third by upgrading to 1GB. (Find out how much memory is installed by clickingStart, going to the Control Panel, and clicking System. In the General tab, you'll see the amount of RAM.) Memory is cheap these days--1GB of RAM can cost as little as $20--so I recommend upgrading to the maximum amount of memory your laptop can use. As mentioned in ourguide to upgrading PC RAM, memory vendors Crucial and Kingston both offer easy-to-use tools for finding the right memory for your computer.

2. Upgrade the hard drive: Replacing your laptop's hard drive will not only get you more space, but it can also significantly increase the laptop's performance. Older laptop hard drives may have a low, 4200-rpm rotational speed; upgrading to a 5400-rpm or 7200-rpm drive will produce a noticeable speed difference during boot-up, data transfers, and general use.
For about $50, you can buy a 5400-rpm hard drive with 320GB of storage space, or a 7200-rpm drive with 320GB of storage. (Compare prices on notebook hard drives.)
You can upgrade the hard drive yourself in just a few minutes. Before ordering the replacement drive, confirm what type of hard drive your laptop currently has (look on the drive itself for the interface type and height, or note the model number and look up the information on the drive manufacturer's website). A notebook hard-drive upgrade kit, such as those from Apricorn starting at $19, can clone your old drive and make transferring your data to the new one very easy.
D-Link DWA-131 D-Link DWA-1313. Upgrade your Wi-Fi to Wireless-N: If your home router uses Wireless-N (aka the 802.11n protocol), you can get faster network connectivity on your laptop by upgrading the notebook's wireless card from the older 802.11b or 802.11g standard to the latest protocol. Wireless-N products have been shown to be as much as seven times faster than 802.11g. Another benefit: Since older wireless devices can drag down the rest of a Wireless-N network, upgrading your laptop can improve your network overall.

Top tips to help you take better photos with your iPhone

The best camera is the one you have with you. These days, the camera most people have with them is their mobile phone. Even though I have a decent DSLR, most of the photos in my library have been taken with my iPhone. Here are some tips to help you take better photos with that device.

1. Know and accept the camera’s limits
I love minor league baseball. Whenever I go see my local club, I’ve gotten into the habit of sending out a photo of my view to friends. The iPhone is great at this, general photos of the ballpark. However, the iPhone is not going to capture a close-up of the slide into second. Unless you’re the second baseman.
While the iPhone has gotten much better at low-light photography, it’s still not all that great so make sure you’ve got good light on your subject. I also recommend keeping the flash off all the time (not on auto) and manually turning it on when you think you need it.
That said, sometimes the only way to capture a memory is to take the darn photo anyway, regardless of quality. Don’t let subpar conditions get you down.
2. Keep the camera steady
Lock your elbows to your body. Hold the iPhone with both hands about 12 inches from your face. I usually twist my hips slightly, bend my knees a little and put my weight slightly on my back leg. Making sure the camera doesn’t jiggle is key to a good photo. Take the photo with your thumb; don’t stab at it with your finger. This will be slightly easier in iOS 5 when you can use the volume buttons to snap a picture. If possible, rest your elbows on a firm object like a railing.
Speaking of railings, a good accessory to have is the Gorilla Mobile for iPhone. This flexible tripod is great to wrap around railings, plop on car hoods, your buddy’s head or just about any object. If you’re using an app that supports self-timers, you can use this to get in the photo, too.
I also recommend getting the Apple bumper case to help you get a grip. A naked iPhone is damn slippery. Ignoring this advice myself, I almost subjected my iPhone to a fall from a roof taking a picture when it jumped from my hand.
3. Get their heads together
The iPhone is great for taking candid shots. The problem is, most people aren’t good at having their pictures taken. When taking pictures of a happy couple, make sure their heads are touching. If you don’t it’ll look there’s a space between their heads you can drive a truck through. If you’re taking pictures of an unhappy couple, make sure you goad them and really get them going. You’ll get a much better picture when they’re swinging at each other.
Basically, just do your best to get your subjects closer together than you think you need to in any situation.
4. Your feet are the best zoom
You know that slider that lets you set the zoom level on your iPhone? Forget it exists. If you need to get closer to your target, walk. Ok, if you’re at the ball park you’ll need to stop at the railing. The digital zoom is a zoom of last resort. Because it’s a digital zoom and not an optical zoom, you’re going to get some pixelation. Like I said earlier, if you’re trying to capture a quick memory, work with what you’ve got and don’t sweat it. But if you have an extra couple of seconds, just put one foot in front of the other until you’re close enough.
5. Free yourself of the default camera app

The stock camera app is great for zomg the cat is doing some cute and I need to take a picture right, right NOW. I have no hate for the default app; it occupies the place of honor in my upper left-hand corner. It’s not, however, always the best tool for the job. There are three apps I recommend to help you take better pictures.

Camera + ($1.99) If you’re at all serious about taking better iPhone pictures, I can’t recommend Camera + enough. It has a grid for framing your shots, a timer, and the ability to stabilize and take burst shots. There are also a slew of filters you can apply after you’ve snapped your shot. Depending on your viewpoint, the fact that images are stored in Camera+’s own lightroom-style sandbox until you export is either good or bad. Bad if you keep forgetting to export it. Good if you’re a congressman still getting the hang of Twitter, and want yet another chance to review your shots before sending them anywhere.
Synthcam (free) I first heard about this from Andy Ihnatko when it was his pick on MacBreak Weekly. It’s an interesting idea: instead of using the high-resolution still camera, Synthcam uses the lower-resolution video camera to take a long-exposure shot (you can choose how long). It then determines what moved during the exposure and what didn’t, and performs some kind of magic to make a crisp image of the static components. What this does is give you the ability to take pictures in low light without a lot of noise. I haven’t tested it much, but for free you can’t go wrong.
just.SelfTimer (free) If you read the title of this app and thought it would be a self-timer camera app… well, you’d be correct. This app isn’t going to necessarily help you take better pictures, but it will help make sure you’re in more of them. The app will take a picture on 3, 5, or 10 second countdown. One benefit to using an app like this is when you hand your iPhone to someone to take a picture of you. Instead of explaining where to press (and have them jiggle the camera), you can set the timer, hand it to them, and strike your pose.
Any other tips for how to get the most out of your iPhone’s still fairly limited camera?

Tips to buy Inexpensive replacement battery for your laptop

A laptop allows for mobility. In the fast-paced environment that is so common these days, no one can ever do without an efficient access to information wherever he may happen to be. More than having a notebook that has an impressive operating system, it’s important to have at least one replacement laptop battery to make sure that you can still continue work even while on the go. It’s not enough that you learn to maximize the use of your current battery. Having another one on reserve is just as important as having a spare tire with you when you’re on the road.

Buying a replacement battery for your laptop can be a tedious task considering that you must have an odd number of options out in the market. There are various companies who manufacture various kinds of laptop batteries and each of these brands are quick to assure you that they only offer the most efficient output. For the novice, the choices may be so confusing so here are a couple of tips to get you started.

A lot of people are inclined to believe that you should only buy your batteries from the manufacturer of your notebook itself. For instance, a Compaq Presario is supposed to only work with a spare battery made by Compaq and you simply can’t attain the same efficiency if say, you bought your battery from Hewlett-Packard.
But this isn’t necessarily true. If you try to closely examine your laptop, you will find that while the name of one maker is embossed on the case, the unit itself is made of different parts that were produced by different companies. The laptop battery is just one of them. Chances are your battery is manufactured by another company from which your notebook brand outsources a part of its production work. In this case, it’s perfectly fine to get a generic replacement battery provided that it’s of high quality.
When buying a spare battery, always go for those that offer at least a year warranty. Make it a point to verify the conditions surrounding the warranty so that you’re assured that you can have your battery replaced in case you find anything unsatisfactory about it. While batteries from old laptops may be cheaper than brand new ones, there are still many risks involved. For one, you may not be able to maximize the longevity of the battery.
If you’re going to buy a battery from the Internet, it goes without saying that you should only transact with trusted websites. It’s better if you buy your battery from a company that has an available customer support line. This is one way to determine the quality of their products. There are usually a hundred different websites offering computer peripherals and accessories that you can browse through so you’ll have a wide variety of choices available for you.
With regards to the type of battery, it’s recommended that you go for a Lithium ion replacement battery. This type is perfect for newer laptops, has a better output and is relatively lighter than others. However, make sure that your laptop can handle a LiON battery.

Tops tips to Recharge your batteries when staying in holiday

You don't need to travel far afield to have a restful break as there are plenty of locations in the UK where you can have some breathing space when staying in holiday cottages. Indeed, for many, Devon is such a place.
Located on the south-western coast of England, this county draws people every year for its mild climate and beautiful countryside.

If you want to escape the troubles of everyday life, you can simply spend your time walking around its traditional English villages, along its beaches and over its hills.
There is plenty to see and do during a stay inDevon holiday cottages, but it is also a great destination if you just want to soak up the atmosphere and relax in a beautiful setting.
As you are surrounded by natural wonders here, this isn't hard to do as you can walk along its rugged coastline or through its green meadows for a splendid day out.
Dartmoor National Park is a beautiful place to visit and is perfect if you want to immerse yourself in the tranquillity of the countryside, taking in some of the area's beautiful vistas.
The national park stretches for more than 368 square miles, meaning there's plenty for you to explore during your trip.
You might want to stroll over its hillsides or cycle through its woodland areas. However, once you've recharged your batteries and are feeling slightly more active, why don't you try some of the different outdoor sports here?
You can go rock-climbing on some of its granite tors or you might prefer going horse-riding over the open moorland and through some of its woodlands.
Spend days exploring the vast open space of Dartmoor National Park before heading to some of Devon's beautiful beaches.
Little sandy bays sit against a backdrop of rolling hills as the clear blue water laps on the beach, making you feel as though you're somewhere in the Mediterranean. South Devon's coves are among some of the most beautiful in the UK and are well worth a visit.

On warmer days, you can lay your towel on the beach and listen to the waves glide against the shoreline. And when you begin to feel peckish, you can stop at some of the region's restaurants where you can sample its delicious fresh seafood delicacies, such as South Devon Crab.

The area is also home to tasty fish and chips, so remember to have some during your stay.
One of the best places to enjoy the region's produce is on the English Riviera, covering the waterfront towns of Torquay, Brixham and Paignton.
All three are popular for different reasons and you can soak up their unique characters by strolling around their beaches, harbours and cobbled streets.
Torquay, in particular, has plenty for you to do once your batteries have been recharged, such as visiting the Agatha Christie Memorial Room or walking through Cockington Court and Country Park.
But, like other Devon towns, it is a great place to sit in a cafe, gazing at the waterfront before you. With such beautiful views, you'll want to choose Devon for your stay in holiday homes in Englandyear after year.

AMOLED screens impact Phone Battery Life

With AMOLED screens becoming increasingly popular on mobile phones, particularly Samsung models such as the Nexus S and Galaxy S 2, it's useful to know there's a way of reducing the impact they have on battery life.
Using Android's built-in system analysis tools, blogger Steve Mould set about discovering how much his battery was being drained by the screen itself. He then went on to find out whether using darker wallpapers, themes and apps would help to reduce power usage.
Guess what? It did.
It's worth mentioning this only works on OLED-based displays and not the currently predominant LCD/LED displays. That's because the backlight is always lit, regardless of what's being displayed. To achieve a black pixel, the light is blocked rather than turned off. In an OLED system each pixel is self-powered, which means black pixels are unlit, saving power.
Other Business News:
The most significant results were found by measuring the difference in battery usage between a Nexus S left for two hours displaying either a white or black screen. The bright screen caused the battery to drop 71 per cent compared to just 12.2 per cent for the dark screen.
If you like looking at a lot of equations, head over to the SHIFT_beeb blog and take a look. It's not an exact science, and in any case every user will get different results based on how they use their phone. If you're running a load of processor-intensive apps it don't matter if your wallpaper is black or white.
There are plenty of other ways of improving battery life. Reducing the display brightness below 50 per cent will work regardless of the screen type, as will turning off features you're not using at the time, such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and ensuring background apps are behaving themselves.
