Dell 7 inch tablets are much easier to handle

While tablets may be all the rage this year, these devices still aren’t as functional as your everyday laptop. While some operating systems are optimized for touch from the ground up, it’s just easier to have a physical keyboard to get your work done. Sure, there are mounds of accessories you can buy for your new purchase, including keyboard docks, but what if the device had a keyboard built right into it? That’s exactly what Dell is doing with the tablet you see above and it actually doesn’t look terrible.

There’s very little known about this prototype above since all specs, including operating system, are unknown. While having a sliding physical keyboard on a 10 inch tablet may be too much, finding one on a 7 inch tablet may be just what the doctor ordered. 7 inch tablets are much easier to handle and are lighter than any 10 incher out there, so the extra weight for a keyboard may be more than tolerable. The split keyboard found on the device looks spacious and very usable, and to be honest we’re surprised to see this coming from Dell.

Dell’s tablet offerings have been a bit sub par to say the least, but after seeing its leaked roadmap, one can tell that the company is betting heavily on this emerging market. We can expect to see more Android tablets from the company as well as some Windows 8 devices down the line. As far as this particular tablet is concerned, either OS would likely benefit from this form factor.
The well designed tablet may pack a serious punch when we see some specs revealed, but until then we’ll have to keep dreaming. If it’s an Android tablet then we’ll no doubt find Dell’s Stage UI running on top, which is nice but offers very little functionality outside of some interesting widgets. If it’s a Windows 8 tablet then we’ll take what we can get, and since its release is still some time away we wouldn’t be surprised if this prototype saw some design changes before it debuts. May we suggest doing something with the center of the keyboard, like some awkward gaming controls?
if the screen can Tilt that'd make it perfect.. well assuming it's dual-core, and running Honey-comb.. at least perfect for me, we'll see about Windows 8.

Dell has already announced its Dell Scalable Filesystem for PowerVault

Dell's spreading of Ocarina dedupe goodness across its storage platforms has to overcome several obstacles, none of which are show-stoppers.
Ocarina deduplicates files – or more accurately, optimises and compresses files – and is content-aware so that it can work its specific magic on JPEGs and cast different spells on PACS images. It does not dedupe blocks and therein lies the rub.
Dell wants to layer its Ocarina dedupe across its storage estate at both file and block level, and not exclude the Windows server-based DL disk-to-disk backup systems that run either CommVault or Symantec software. Darren Thomas, Dell storage VP and general manager, is confident this is all possible.

File dedupe

The file need is easiest, being Ocarina's home ground so to speak. Dell has already announced its Dell Scalable Filesystem (DSFS) for PowerVault with the NX3500, and for EqualLogic with the FS7500, in the form of NAS heads. One is coming for Compellent and another for the DX6000, the object storage box. Dell will add the Ocarina dedupe technology to that box and it immediately becomes available for all the storage platforms under the DSFS head; the timing is the same.
Thomas said: "Think of it like a RAID feature. It's a dedupe feature for a file system."
That does not include the DL arrays though. Dell understands that it is desirable that data, file data, that is being backed up from DSFS-headed arrays does not have to be rehydrated before being backed to the CommVault or Symantec DL products, but neither supplier's software supports Ocarina.
We understand that CommVault is thinking about how to import Ocarina-ised information and avoid the re-hydration. Symantec, according to our research, understands the desirability of avoiding the rehydration but is not so far advanced as CommVault in talking to Dell about the issue.
Darren Thomas said Dell represents 20 to 25 per cent of CommVault's revenues and we can imagine that this gives Dell people significant mindshare in, and fast-access to, senior people in CommVault. Such access is not so attainable with the much larger Symantec.
Dell inspiron 1520 battery
Darren Thomas said there is also a need for these two DL software suppliers to be able to export (restore) the backed-up data to other third-party systems, which are enabled to read the Ocarina-ised data. These systems would need to have Ocarina Reader software, which is a relatively small piece of code, as well as being well within Dell's power to distribute.

Block dedupe

Blocks are different. Blocks are difficult. The size of groups of blocks, chunks or pages, varies between the Dell storage platforms. On EqualLogic systems a block is 15MB whereas on Compellent's it varies and the 64-bit StorageCenter O/S will track at the block level. A block is not a complete file, although the storage O/S can in principle be queried about which blocks makeup which files. Having files striped across drives increases the fragmentation a block-level deduper of primary storage has to deal with.
The larger the page or chunk size the higher the probability of finding duplicated data within it.

Lithium-Ion laptop battery is no exception for batteries lifespan

Is your laptop starting to feel more like a desktop, constantly needing to be plugged in and recharged? This is a classic sign of capacity loss, where batteries become increasingly unable to carry a charge. Unfortunately, battery degradation is unavoidable. All batteries have a lifespan, and with a life expectancy of 2-4 years, the Lithium-Ion laptop battery is no exception. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to slow the degradation process.
1. Avoid Excessive Heat

3. Your Battery Should Calibrated Every Month

The UK iPad 2 release date is mere days away, but the rumour factory's already moved on: it's predicting iPad 3 specifications including chips, cameras and retina displays - with a little bit of help from mysterious, unnamed people who can't possibly be identified.
How very convenient. So what's the word on the street about the next iPad?
The iPad 3 release date is September 2011
This is the biggest rumour of all: an iPad 3 mere months after the iPad 2. An unnamed Apple employee says that the iPad 2 was a bit of a rush job, and "the third generation iPad is the one to make a song and dance about."
Respected Apple watcher John Gruber added fuel to that particular fire by strongly hinting that the iPad 3 release date will be in September.
Gruber, who was musing about the HP TouchPad's potential summer release said: "Summer feels like a long time away.
"If my theory is right, they're not only going to be months behind the iPad 2, but if they slip until late summer, they might bump up against the release of the iPad 3."
If Gruber is right about this and the iPad 3 features in an Apple autumn line-up, then it looks like Apple is going to start offering a new iPad every six months.
The iPad 3 UK release date is a mystery
With Apple apparently unable to meet demand for iPad 2, we'd expect a staggered release date for the iPad 3 too: if the US gets the iPad 3 in September, we'd expect the UK iPad 3 release date to be in October, or possibly even November. Apple won't want to miss the Christmas period, but the US comes first.
The iPad 3 specs include a dual-core processor
It's possible that the iPad 3 will have a brand spanking new processor, Apple's A6, but if the rumoured release date is correct then time is awfully tight: we'd certainly expect to see an A5, not an A6, in the iPhone 5 when it turns up this summer.
Apple may well surprise us, of course, but we'd expect to see the same processor and graphics as the iPad 2 in the iPad 3: an A5 processor with PowerVR SGX543MP2 graphics. This one comes down to the iPad 3 release date: if it's 2011, expect an A5. If it's 2012, expect a faster A6.
The iPad 3 features include a retina display
This was widely predicted for the iPad 2, but of course the current iPad doesn't have a double-resolution display: for now, that's something you'll only get in the iPhone 4. Could a Retina Display be one of the features Apple didn't quite get into the iPad 2? Could be! It's the very first thing on our iPad 3 wish list.
The iPad 3 hardware could include an NFC chip
Apple's very interested in Near Field Communications, and one particularly tasty rumour at Cult of Mac suggests that the iPhone 5 will use NFC to take over nearby Macs, enabling you to use your data and settings with a flick of the wrist. Since the iPad 3 will follow the iPhone 5, if NFC's in one it'll probably be in the other too.
The iPad 3 specifications will include more storage
The iPad 2 has the familiar 16/32/64GB storage options, but as flash storage comes down in price a 128GB option for the iPad 3 isn't impossible - although that might depend on the current horrible situation in Asia, where the tsunami has caused chaos in parts of the electronics industry.
The iPad 3 features could include a Thunderbolt port
Two generations of USB-free iPads suggest that Apple just isn't interested in adding one, but the new Thunderbolt port found in the 2011 MacBook Pro could be another story: it's a combined accessory/display connector with astonishingly fast performance.
The iPad 3 may live in the cloud
This has been talked about and leaked about for so long that, on the same principle that even a stopped clock is right twice a day, it's bound to come true eventually: a cloud-based MobileMe for storing your stuff on Apple's servers. A new iPad with iOS 5 and a new MobileMe would be lots of fun.
The iPad 3 specs might include an SD card slot
This was widely predicted for iPad 2 and, like the retina display, didn't materialise. One for version 3, perhaps? Using a separate adapter to read camera cards is rather inelegant and clunky.

The rear-facing camera on the iPad 2 isn't brilliant: an iPhone 4 camera and flash would do nicely.

HYPE is building around the Australian release of the iPad 2 with less than a week to go before it hits local stores. Critics have praised the upgrade of the trendsetting-tablet and the gadget has sold out in just days across the US.

The next-generation iPad is lighter, faster and more powerful than the original and has new features like front and rear cameras.
And while Apple is remaining characteristically tight-lipped about the product and is yet to set a price for Australian retailers, our guide will help prepare for the frenzy to come.

Apple stores are expected to secure the initial units headed for Australia, with major electronics retailers, department stores, telecommunications providers and authorised Apple resellers scrambling to grab stock for the March 25 release date.
Foad Fadaghi, director of telecommunications consultancy Telsyte, said it was highly likely the iPad 2 would vanish quickly.
"We saw lines for the iPad 1. This device is a better device than the iPad 1, so naturally we'd expect just the same sort of demand," Mr Fadaghi said.
"As we've seen in the US it's quite likely that many people will have to wait some weeks if they don't get onto it straight away."
Justin Lewis of Apple reseller Beyond the Box in Moonee Ponds said they would be selling it from March 25, but stock would be spread thinly around the country.
"There will be a feeding frenzy for the first six months,'' Mr Lewis said.
Profiteers are also expected to start flogging the device on trading sites such as eBay and Gumtree for an increased price, in addition to the used original models which will be up for sale from tech-heads eager to upgrade.

Apple traditionally prices its product upgrades the same as the previous model, and the iPad 2 is predicted to be no different.
The original launched in Australia on May 28 last year from $629 for the entry-level 16GB Wi-Fi model.
Stores have already slashed the price of the original iPad to $449 with discount department store Big W selling it from $398.
Mr Fadaghi said the older version may come down further in price as demand rises for the iPad 2 and that they would be competitively sold on trading websites for negotiable prices.
>> Should I upgrade?
The iPad 2 is touted as being twice as fast as the original, lighter and thinner than the iPhone 4 at just 8.8mm.
It houses both front and rear cameras, allowing for FaceTime video calling. It has the capability to print wirelessly, includes the Smart Cover, which magnetically protects the screen, and comes in both white and black designs.
But there are still no USB ports, no slots for SD cards and no support for Flash.
Mr Fadaghi said trends from the US indicated many iPad owners would be making the switch.
"Some of the early figures that have come out of the US suggest that up to 30 per cent of the original iPad owners have gone ahead and bought an iPad 2,'' he said.
Tim Grey, online editor of Australian Macworld said the upgrade means the iPad would continue to define the tablet category.
"Now that it's twice as powerful it can do much more complicated tasks than it could in the past. Much faster graphics processing is going to mean a really impressive games and multimedia system,'' Mr Grey said.

But Mr Lewis said whether users made the upgrade would depend on what they wanted to use their iPad for.
"The person that will really jump on it will want to use the video connectivity with Skype and FaceTime,'' he said.
"If they want an iPad and don't want a camera the iPad 1 is probably a great option now.''
Mr Fadaghi recommended consumers buy an iPad with both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity.
"If they're going to use it like a smartphone-type device, they should definitely look at spending the bit of extra money that it costs to get one that has 3G connectivity," he said.
He also recommended a pre-paid SIM card so buyers could test their usage before opting for a plan.

Some authorised Apple resellers are offering trade-in options for original iPads.
Hillel Lithwick, owner of PalaeoGraphics in Elsternwick, said they would allow iPad owners to trade-in the original for the iPad 2 by paying the difference.
"In the Mac realm people like staying up with the latest stuff, so it's essential to have something in place so we can do that,'' Mr Lithwick said.
Mr Lewis said Beyond the Box will also offer trade-ins with the price depending on the function, condition and age of the original iPad.
You could find a new home for your old tablet by selling it on an online trading site and using the cash on your new gadget.
Just be prepared to be competitive as many other iPad owners will be thinking the same thing.
