Sony's upcoming Android tablets sure haven't been publicity-shy

For products which still haven't been officially announced, Sony's upcoming Android tablets sure haven't been publicity-shy. Sony first teased us about them back in April. And on Wednesday, it held press events in New York and San Francisco at which it showed them off and released more details, such as the fact that the smaller S1 will be available exclusively in a version for AT&T's HSPA+ network -- although not full specs, or pricing, or a shipping timeframe other than "later this year."
I attended the West Coast edition of the sneak peek. When I see new tablets these days, I'm continuing to reflexively ask the question "Why should somebody buy this instead of an iPad?" It's too early to come to any firm conclusions about the Sonys, but both pass the obvious-differences-from-Apple's-tablet test.
The S1 is a 9.4" model with a wedge shape that angles the screen for comfy typing and feels like a folded magazine. (It's a major departure from every other current tablet -- but it does remind me of theoriginal 2007 version of Amazon's Kindle.)

The smaller S2, meanwhile, stretches the definition of "tablet" a bit. It's a clamshell device with two 5.5" displays which, in unfolded mode, can operate independently or as one big screen. It's reminiscent ofAcer's Iconia and Toshiba's experimental Portege, but the hinge makes more sense on the S2: the screens are small enough that a folded-shut unit will fit in a pocket. (Try that with your iPad.)
On the software side, Sony is going through a fair amount of effort to make these tablets stand apart from the Android herd. They both have a feature called Quick View which is designed to load Web pages much faster than the standard Android browser. (For what it's worth, it worked in Sony's demo.) They're also designed for extra-responsive scrolling, and are PlayStation-certified devices that can play some older PlayStation games, and will come with Sony's Reader e-book store and Qriocity movie and music services. The S1 includes a universal remote feature (which leverages the built-in IR port) and Sony is working with Adobe to help developers build Adobe AIR apps that make good use of the S2's twin screens.

AT&T on Wednesday said it plans to sell a version of the S2 (which, by the way, is a codename) "later this year." This new version of the S2 will be able to access AT&T's 4G network, in addition to Wi-Fi. People interested in the S2 will be able to purchase it with monthly data plans, though pricing for those plans wasn't revealed.
As with the 4G HP TouchPad announced Tuesday, 4G in this case doesn't mean Long Term Evolution, it means HSPA+. AT&T plans to launch five LTE markets this summer, with perhaps another 10 markets following by the end of the year. Since AT&T does not advertise the speeds it offers through its HSPA+ network, we can only assume that it will offer speedy networks in the areas AT&T says include "enhanced backhaul." Best guess?

The warranty company released a research paper late last year analyzing failure rates for over 30,000 laptops covered by their warranties. The report is full of good information worth considering before your next big purchase. The highlights of the study:
  • Looking at the first 3 years of ownership, 31% of laptop owners reported a failure to SquareTrade. Two-thirds of this failure (20.4%) came from hardware malfunctions, and one-third (10.6%) was reported as accidental damage.
  • Netbooks are projected to have a 20% higher failure rate from hardware malfunctions than more expensive laptop computers.
  • ASUS and Toshiba were the most reliable manufacturers, with fewer than 16% having a hardware malfunction over 3 years.

Battery Care:Keep Volt Battery at Ideal Temperature

Engineers of the four-seat Chevrolet Volt electric car often refer to its 435-pound battery pack as the fifth passenger. Given the care taken to keep the pack at just the right temperature in all temperature conditions, there is a lot of truth to that.
The Volt's ability to operate gasoline-free on a day-to-day basis and carry an eight-year/100,000-mile battery warranty is due to active thermal management of the advanced Hp dv9000 battery pack.
"Every battery has a temperature sweet spot where it provides the optimal blend of power output, energy capacity and long life and we keep the Volt right on that target," said Bill Wallace, General Motors director of Global Battery Systems.  Batteries that are too cold are reluctant to release electrons while batteries that run too hot can see a significantly shorter life.
The Volt's T-shaped battery pack consists of 288 individual cells arranged into nine modules. Plastic frames hold pairs of lithium-ion cells that sandwich an aluminum cooling fin. The design and construction of that aluminum plate is critical to ensuring an even temperature distribution with no hot or cool spots across the flat, rectangular cell. The battery pack has its own cooling circuit that is similar to, but independent from, the engine cooling system.
The Dana Corp-manufactured cooling fin consists of two lightweight aluminum plates joined by a proprietary clean nickel-brazing process. The carefully designed grooves stamped into the plates form channels that allow battery coolant that is pumped through the pack to flow over the entire cell surface.
"Three different systems are used to regulate the temperature of the coolant," said Wallace. "When the Volt is plugged in and charging in cold weather, an electric heater at the front of the battery pack is used to warm the coolant and pre-heat the battery. During normal operations, the coolant is passed through a heat exchanger at the front of the car, while a chiller in the air conditioning circuit can be used to dissipate heat from the battery when temperatures really climb."
The management system monitors feedback from 16 thermal sensors arranged throughout the battery pack to maintain a spread of no more than 2 degrees centigrade from the optimal temperature across the pack.
Getting the battery temperature just right was a product of lessons learned from the EV1 and 15 years of testing fuel cell stacks. GM engineers and researchers learned a lot about how to circulate coolant to maintain an even temperature distribution. Those learnings went straight into the cooling system of the Volt battery.

1. Facebook check-ins and privacy

When Facebook announced its location-based check-in service, “Places,” in August 2010, it was quickly met with concerns about its people tagging feature.
With this feature enabled, your Facebook friends can tag you and “check you in” to a place. You receive a notification when you’re tagged, and an update is posted on your wall telling your friends where you are and who you’re with. You can remove the tag at any time.
To disable the feature, visit Account -> Privacy Settings -> Customize Settings. Scroll to the middle section—“things others share”—and click “Edit settings” next to “Friends can check me in to Places.”
Another important Facebook privacy setting to review if you use Places is whether or not you want to be included in a “People Here Now” list once you check in to a location.
By default, your name and Facebook profile picture appear in the list, which is visible to anyone—friend or not—who checks in to the same location. To disable this setting, visit Account -> Privacy Settings- > Customize Settings, and then uncheck the box at the bottom of the first section that reads, “Include me in ‘People Here Now’ after I check in.”

2. Revoking Facebook’s “Instant Personalization”

“Instant Personalization” debuted in April 2010 to plenty of criticism, and for good reason: The feature is confusing and Facebook’s online explanation does not make it clear how participating sites use your information.
If you visit one of the sites that supports Instant personalization—Bing, TripAdvisor, Rotten Tomatoes, Pandora, Yelp and others—and you’ve enabled the feature, you can see which of your friends have “liked” certain movies or news stories and browse reviews they posted.
