Microsoft too has its own cloud service called SkyDrive


Apple’s iCloud announcemen finally showed the long awaited follow-up to Mobileme. While MobileMe was considered a failure on most accounts for Apple, iCloud looks to be a replacement worthy of the Apple branding.
Windows Flag (New)But not to be outdone, Microsoft too has its own cloud service called SkyDrive. Microsoft states that since 2007, Skydrive has been the one place to access your documents, photos and more from anywhere for free. Going a step further they state that Skydrive has over 100M users, 2.2Petabytes of data stored which includes 250M documents.
But more than just SkyDrive, the Windows live team has been investing in the cloud for over a decade. Microsoft is currently servicing over 500 million customers with Xbox Live, Skydrive, Hotmail and Messenger.  Microsoft is touting its statistics to show that iCloud is far from an industry revolution and that Microsoft has been playing in these waters for a very long time.
While the jury is still out on if iCloud will be a successful product, it has put the spotlight back on to cloud related services. For consumers, it is an exciting time as companies compete for your information to be stored in their cloud. For corporations, they have a massive investment that needs to show returns to support the cloud business model.
Microsoft doesn't provide any practical or friendly way to use and access skydrive. At least not for windows. You have accessing via browser, thats it.
why not allow an easier way to access it? Mount it as a drive? and so on.
if there is a microsoft way of doing this (without third party hacks) then please enlighten me.
i just use use livemesh which kinda syncs it to skydrive, but not really.
There is no simplistic Microsoft way to access skydrive, yet, which is a shame. But then again, they have so many users that will take advantage of the service, they probably just weren't ready to handle the potential bandwidth. However, just everything that iCloud is doing Mango bring to Windows Phone7, some it already does. The most unique this iCloud will have is accessing your music, which you can already do with Zune Pass but that costs $15/mo while iCloud is $25/yr, but, Zune Pass is all music, not just your own. Anyway, I'm glad to see Apple doing this, because it means that everyone will be fighting aggressively, which is great for us.

Toshiba Android Tablet "Thrive" Will be coming in June

Toshiba will launch its first tablet computer in late June in Japan and at around the same time in global markets, the company said Wednesday.
With the tablet, Toshiba will kick off an attempt to gain a 10 percent share of the global tablet market by 2013, said Masaaki Oosumi, president of Toshiba's digital products and services unit, at a Tokyo news conference. The company is one of the oldest and most well-known names in laptop computers, so its entry is likely to further raise competition in an increasingly active market.
The tablet PCs, which is based on the Android 3.0 operating system, was first previewed at January's International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, but the company did not announce a launch date or price at that time.
The tablet has a 10.1-inch screen and will run on Nvidia's Tegra 2 processor. The LED-backlit screen has 1280 x 800 pixel resolution, and the tablet will be equipped with front and back-facing Hp presario cq40 battery,Dell latitude d630 batterycameras, and connectors for USB, Mini USB, HDMI and an SD Card slot. Sony is also developing a tablet PC, but the company isn't saying much about its plans. It's due sometime later this year.
A month after the tablet PC launches, Toshiba will begin selling a laptop PC with a screen that can produce the illusion of three dimensions without requiring the user to wear special glasses.
The computer, which will form part of its Qosmio range, has a thin lens in front of the display that can aim a slightly different version of the computer's image towards the user's right and left eyes. Apple 17in MacBook Pro Reviews

We’ve already reviewed the new Apple MacBook Pro 15in, and the 17in model shares much of the same DNA. There’s just one pre-configured specification available, with the same Sandy Bridge processor and AMD graphics as its smaller sibling, and it also gets the new Intel Thunderbolt port ready for ultra-fast peripherals to arrive.
The biggest difference is the screen, and what a screen it is. It’s one of the few laptops we’ve seen recently with a traditional 1,920 x 1,200 resolution, and it positively beams with quality. Measuring our sample with a colorimeter, we found a huge maximum luminance of 342cd/m2 and a contrast ratio of 760:1. As for colour accuracy, a Delta E score of 5.6 is good for a laptop, although slightly less accurate than the screen on the 15in model.
That display is powered by both an Intel HD Graphics 3000 integrated chip and AMD’s Radeon HD 6750M graphics, and it’s suitably fast for such a big machine. It handled Crysis with ease, managing 52fps in our 1,600 x 900 test at Medium settings; upping that to native resolution saw the frame rate stay playable at 35fps, so you should be able to play the latest games in most of their glory. The GPU helps hugely with photo and video editing, too.

That’s shown by the MacBook Pro 17in’s performance in our all-new Real World Benchmarks. A 2.2GHz Intel Core i7-2720QM and 4GB of DDR3 RAM combined for an overall score of 0.84, with a higher 0.88 in the Media segment, which uses Photoshop CS5, Sony Vegas and iTunes. It’s no faster than the 15in version, unsurprising given the identical core components, but the extra screen size makes it a very enticing prospect.

You get three USB 2 and one FireWire port, that DiplayPort-compatible Thunderbolt connector, along with Gigabit Ethernet, two 3.5mm jacks and, disappointingly, an ExpressCard/34 slot. Photographers may feel they’d get more use out of the SDXC slot present on the smaller models.

Doing that won’t get you great battery life, as the Boot Camp drivers don’t do switchable graphics, but we got impressive results in Mac OS X. Even with all that grunt and a 17in screen to power, the MacBook Pro lasted one minute shy of eight hours in our light-use browsing test. At 3kg, it’s not exactly light, but it certainly won’t let you down if you do choose to lug it away from the mains.

As usual, however, we have to question the price of an Apple product. There’s no doubt that there’s a lot of power here, and that battery life will wipe the floor with most laptops of this size, but can it really justify the £2,099 inc VAT price tag? For comparison, we looked at Dell’s new XPS 17 with the same CPU and RAM, a slightly smaller 640GB hard disk, Nvidia GeForce GT 555M graphics and a Full HD, 3D-capable screen. We can’t vouch for the screen quality and the graphics chip isn't quite as fast, but that would set you back just £1,314 inc VAT.
Don’t get us wrong – if you’re an imaging professional, it’s hard to argue that there are many more suitable choices out there than the new Apple MacBook Pro 17in. It’s a truly brilliant laptop in most key areas, but don’t let that fool you into thinking you’re getting great value for your money. As with previous top-end MacBook Pros, this 17in model comes at quite a premium.

Laptop-Reliability Study Highlights the Most Sturdy Laptop Makers
There's nothing worse than buying new gear that malfunctions shortly after you purchase it. If you're in the market for a new laptop, check out warranty-provider SquareTrade's detailed laptop-reliability report to find the most dependable hardware.
The warranty company released a research paper late last year analyzing failure rates for over 30,000 laptops covered by their warranties. The report is full of good information worth considering before your next big purchase. The highlights of the study:
  • Looking at the first 3 years of ownership, 31% of laptop owners reported a failure to SquareTrade. Two-thirds of this failure (20.4%) came from hardware malfunctions, and one-third (10.6%) was reported as accidental damage.
  • Netbooks are projected to have a 20% higher failure rate from hardware malfunctions than more expensive laptop computers.
  • ASUS and Toshiba were the most reliable manufacturers, with fewer than 16% having a hardware malfunction over 3 years.

It's interesting to note that, on a whole, netbooks are a lot more failure prone than laptops. It's also perhaps a little surprising that a company like Apple, known for its hardware, still ends up a percentage point or two worse off than companies like ASUS and Toshiba when it comes to laptop malfunction rates.
