HP and Dell are seen as important vehicles to improve storage utilisation

After going on the acquisition path over the last three years Dell has carved a greater niche for itself in the data management arena, and it was keen to show off its industry position at this week's Dell Storage Forum in Orlando, attended by over 1,000 partners and customers.
At the same time, HP was holding its user conference in Las Vegas, where it  announced a new range of data storage products.
Last year HP acquired networking firm 3Com for $2.7 billion and cloud storage management company 3Par for $2.35 billion, a company which Dell was rumoured to be interested in. Over the last three years Dell has acquired EqualLogic, Perot Systems, Exanet, Ocarina Networks, and Scalent, with Compellent being added to the bunch for $940 million earlier this year.
Other Business News:

All the companies aquired by HP and Dell are seen as important vehicles to improve storage utilisation, balance data workloads and automate storage tiering at companies, allowing them to improve productivity and more efficiently operate their storage networks.
Darren Thomas, vice president and general manager of Dell Storage, said: "It's not about the machines anymore, it's about the data, and the challenge for the industry is data lifecycle management."
Thomas told delegates he expected that by 2020, every man, woman and child who had ever lived on the planet would have been responsible for generating the equivalent of 2 terabytes of data each, a challenge for companies as "they are responsible for managing 80 percent of what is generated".
He said that before any IT upgrades were ever completed at firms, the amount of data would always double, which is why Dell was now focusing on its "Fluid Data" strategy.
Thomas said Fluid Data would mean bringing out storage products that made data "dynamic" - that it went where it needed to go automatically for optimum performance without having to deploy new hardware.
That said, Thomas used his keynote to launch a range of new hardware storage systems that helped demonstrate how Dell was integrating the technologies it has aquired over the last three years.
The new Dell EqualLogic FS7500 box uses Dell blade technology and EqualLogic technology to serve network attached storage (NAS) and unified storage markets. Dell claims it provides "up to 10 times more file share scalability than legacy unified storage offerings".

Microsoft too has its own cloud service called SkyDrive

Apple’s iCloud announcemen finally showed the long awaited follow-up to Mobileme. While MobileMe was considered a failure on most accounts for Apple, iCloud looks to be a replacement worthy of the Apple branding.
Windows Flag (New)But not to be outdone, Microsoft too has its own cloud service called SkyDrive. Microsoft states that since 2007, Skydrive has been the one place to access your documents, photos and more from anywhere for free. Going a step further they state that Skydrive has over 100M users, 2.2Petabytes of data stored which includes 250M documents.
But more than just SkyDrive, the Windows live team has been investing in the cloud for over a decade. Microsoft is currently servicing over 500 million customers with Xbox Live, Skydrive, Hotmail and Messenger.  Microsoft is touting its statistics to show that iCloud is far from an industry revolution and that Microsoft has been playing in these waters for a very long time.
While the jury is still out on if iCloud will be a successful product, it has put the spotlight back on to cloud related services. For consumers, it is an exciting time as companies compete for your information to be stored in their cloud. For corporations, they have a massive investment that needs to show returns to support the cloud business model.
Microsoft doesn't provide any practical or friendly way to use and access skydrive. At least not for windows. You have accessing via browser, thats it.
why not allow an easier way to access it? Mount it as a drive? and so on.
if there is a microsoft way of doing this (without third party hacks) then please enlighten me.
i just use use livemesh which kinda syncs it to skydrive, but not really.
There is no simplistic Microsoft way to access skydrive, yet, which is a shame. But then again, they have so many users that will take advantage of the service, they probably just weren't ready to handle the potential bandwidth. However, just everything that iCloud is doing Mango bring to Windows Phone7, some it already does. The most unique this iCloud will have is accessing your music, which you can already do with Zune Pass but that costs $15/mo while iCloud is $25/yr, but, Zune Pass is all music, not just your own. Anyway, I'm glad to see Apple doing this, because it means that everyone will be fighting aggressively, which is great for us.

Lithium Batteries Future Will be Controled by ALPA

Lithium batteries being shipped by air have long been a concern for the National Transportation Safety Board and federal transportation authorities, and ALPA has supported fully regulating them -- including increased marking, labeling, and packaging requirements; conducting employee training; and notifying the pilot-in-command that these shipments are aboard the aircraft -- since 2004.
"While paint and dry ice shipments aboard aircraft are currently regulated as dangerous goods, shipments of lithium batteries are not, despite the aircraft incidents and fires linked to the unsafe shipment of these batteries and their ability to self-ignite when improperly packaged or mishandled," Moak said in his statement to the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials.
The statement says presario cq40 battery can spontaneously catch fire, emitting sparks, flames, and large amounts of smoke. If packaged or handled inappropriately, the batteries can self-ignite and, once ignited, the fire can quickly spread from battery to battery and be extremely difficult to extinguish.
"While the International Civil Aviation Organization requirements serve as a regulatory foundation, they don't go far enough in ensuring the safe transport of lithium batteries as cargo," it says. "The gaps that result seriously threaten the safety of airline passengers, crews, cargo, and even individuals on the ground who could be harmed in an incident." ALPA supports U.S. regulations that go beyond the ICAO requirements by:
  • Mandating notification of the pilot-in-command that lithium batteries(Hp pavilion dv4 batteries) are being transported. Knowing that hazardous materials are aboard the aircraft can affect pilots' decisions, including which airport to choose in an emergency diversion and what information to provide so that first responders are prepared with equipment necessary to fight a fire on board.
  • Limiting the total quantity of lithium batteries permitted to be shipped aboard a single aircraft. While the number of batteries per shipping package is limited, there is no limit to the number of packages that may be shipped aboard a single aircraft.
  • Restricting lithium battery shipments to specific cargo compartments. Lithium ion batteries are proven to respond favorably to the Halon system in a Class C cargo compartment. The batteries need to be fully regulated to ensure they are loaded only in cargo compartments that are equipped with the most effective fire suppression systems.Hp pavilion dv8000 battery
  • Banning shipment of lithium-metal batteries on all aircraft. While the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration banned shipments of lithium-metal batteries(Hp pavilion dv9000 battery) on passenger aircraft in 2004, they are still allowed on cargo aircraft.
  • Requiring dangerous-goods labels. A dangerous-goods label requirement would increase awareness on the part of the ground personnel who load and unload aircraft and potentially reduce the likelihood that damaged shipments would be loaded on aircraft.
  • Mandating training for lithium battery shippers and handlers. Safety would be enhanced by raising awareness among shippers and providing training on the safe handling of lithium batteries. With regulatory training requirements, lithium battery shippers, handlers, and facilities would be subject to oversight and inspection to ensure that training and packaging provisions are met.
Did you know that detaching your main laptop battery from your laptop would increase your laptop's battery life up to 75%? Our experience and testing have shown that even when you are plugged in with your laptop ac adapter and your battery is fully charged, the laptop will still use the laptop battery resources in small increments. This will put unnecessary charge cycles to your battery. Since typical li-ion laptop batteries have 375 charge cycles, having a fully charged Hp presario cq60 battery,Hp mini 1000 battery inserted will put unnecessary charge cycles. The downside to removing your laptop battery maybe a loss of power when the ac adapter is accidentally unplugged or when there is a power outage.

Future Battery - Powered Life

Hop into the DeLorean, and take a look at your life in 2021. Are spacesuits fashionable and is teleporting feasible? We’re keeping that a secret. But one thing is for sure: your daily routine has drastically changed, for the better. It’s smarter, more efficient and, well, just plain easier. Manually controlling your household appliances? That’s so 10 years ago.
ToshibaHome from http://www.wholesaleeshop.com.au
We didn’t use gravitational time dilation to figure out what you’ll be using in the future. On display at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show were several manufacturers’ mock-ups of the smarter home and car. At the heart of it all was a little piece of technology that will change the way we consume energy and power our devices: the lithium-ion battery.
The presentations on the show floor displayed homes that pretty much think for themselves – a washing machine that turns on during lowest energy hours, or an oven that downloads recipes (LG is really working on this). The best part? You will be able to control all of these things from your smartphone or tablet.
Toshiba is developing its Home Energy Management System (HEMS), which will monitor and forecast your home’s energy output in real-time numbers. Essentially, all of the appliances, electronics and climate control will be powered by a rechargeable battery that stores energy generated from solar power or fuel cells.
“In the future there will be chips in your appliances, fridges and washing machine communicating back to you so that you can track each individual appliance. You can then take certain steps to reduce your power consumption,” said Craig Hershberg, director of environmental affairs for Toshiba.A fuel cell (center) and hot water storage unit from http://www.wholesaleeshop.com.au
Accessibility will be key to efficiently running your home. While you will have a controllable display panel on the wall of your home, you will also be able jump on your laptop, tablet or phone for easy control.
“Through a rechargeable battery, your home will be able to store any of the energy you might have gotten from a solar panel to be used later in peak hours when you’re going to pay more for electricity,” said Hershberg.
The battery to which Hershberg is referring is the SCiB rechargeable battery, which has a 6,000 charge-discharge cycle, and 90 percent of its capacity is charged in just five minutes. Toshiba claims that this battery’s product life increased by three to five times, compared to conventionallithium-ion batteries.
“Batteries are constantly changing to meet demands. Businesses and consumers want faster, lighter, long-lasting, cheap laptop batteries, so the battery technology must evolve,” she said. “What results is a chicken-egg effect: batteries are evolving because of product demand, and when the batteries evolve, products change or improve.”Welcome to wholesaleeshop.com.au
The good news is that these types of Dell xps m1330 battery are recyclable, and their valuable metal content is easily recoverable, namely cobalt, nickel and some other residuals. As for those models that we’ll be using 10 years down the road, Barka said recycling programs are likely to progress alongside Hp dv1000 battery innovation.
“Existing recycling programs will evolve to meet the demands of recycling, and Call2Recycle is certainly recycling more and more lithium-ion,” she said.
