Lithium Batteries Future Will be Controled by ALPA

Lithium batteries being shipped by air have long been a concern for the National Transportation Safety Board and federal transportation authorities, and ALPA has supported fully regulating them -- including increased marking, labeling, and packaging requirements; conducting employee training; and notifying the pilot-in-command that these shipments are aboard the aircraft -- since 2004.
"While paint and dry ice shipments aboard aircraft are currently regulated as dangerous goods, shipments of lithium batteries are not, despite the aircraft incidents and fires linked to the unsafe shipment of these batteries and their ability to self-ignite when improperly packaged or mishandled," Moak said in his statement to the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee's Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials.
The statement says presario cq40 battery can spontaneously catch fire, emitting sparks, flames, and large amounts of smoke. If packaged or handled inappropriately, the batteries can self-ignite and, once ignited, the fire can quickly spread from battery to battery and be extremely difficult to extinguish.
"While the International Civil Aviation Organization requirements serve as a regulatory foundation, they don't go far enough in ensuring the safe transport of lithium batteries as cargo," it says. "The gaps that result seriously threaten the safety of airline passengers, crews, cargo, and even individuals on the ground who could be harmed in an incident." ALPA supports U.S. regulations that go beyond the ICAO requirements by:
  • Mandating notification of the pilot-in-command that lithium batteries(Hp pavilion dv4 batteries) are being transported. Knowing that hazardous materials are aboard the aircraft can affect pilots' decisions, including which airport to choose in an emergency diversion and what information to provide so that first responders are prepared with equipment necessary to fight a fire on board.
  • Limiting the total quantity of lithium batteries permitted to be shipped aboard a single aircraft. While the number of batteries per shipping package is limited, there is no limit to the number of packages that may be shipped aboard a single aircraft.
  • Restricting lithium battery shipments to specific cargo compartments. Lithium ion batteries are proven to respond favorably to the Halon system in a Class C cargo compartment. The batteries need to be fully regulated to ensure they are loaded only in cargo compartments that are equipped with the most effective fire suppression systems.Hp pavilion dv8000 battery
  • Banning shipment of lithium-metal batteries on all aircraft. While the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration banned shipments of lithium-metal batteries(Hp pavilion dv9000 battery) on passenger aircraft in 2004, they are still allowed on cargo aircraft.
  • Requiring dangerous-goods labels. A dangerous-goods label requirement would increase awareness on the part of the ground personnel who load and unload aircraft and potentially reduce the likelihood that damaged shipments would be loaded on aircraft.
  • Mandating training for lithium battery shippers and handlers. Safety would be enhanced by raising awareness among shippers and providing training on the safe handling of lithium batteries. With regulatory training requirements, lithium battery shippers, handlers, and facilities would be subject to oversight and inspection to ensure that training and packaging provisions are met.
Did you know that detaching your main laptop battery from your laptop would increase your laptop's battery life up to 75%? Our experience and testing have shown that even when you are plugged in with your laptop ac adapter and your battery is fully charged, the laptop will still use the laptop battery resources in small increments. This will put unnecessary charge cycles to your battery. Since typical li-ion laptop batteries have 375 charge cycles, having a fully charged Hp presario cq60 battery,Hp mini 1000 battery inserted will put unnecessary charge cycles. The downside to removing your laptop battery maybe a loss of power when the ac adapter is accidentally unplugged or when there is a power outage.

Battery News - Use the ocean to recharge batteries

Battery News - Use the ocean to recharge batteries www.wholesaleeshop.com.au

When people think of harvesting energy from the oceans, it's typically in the form of wave or tidal power, in which the motion of the water drives the production of electricity. A paper in Nano Letters suggests an alternate way to turn the ocean into power: using the fact that it's salty. There have been a few ideas about how to extract energy from the salinity difference between salt and fresh water, but the paper suggests a rather intriguing approach: treat the entire ocean a bit like a battery medium.
The battery charge cycle generally involves the exchange of electrons with ions that shuffle between a storage medium and electrodes; normally, the ions themselves remain encased within the battery. The new device takes a very different approach, allowing the ions to exchange Hp pavilion dv5 battery freely with water that flows through it.
The device has electrodes that specifically react with some of the salt ions normally found in sea water. One is made of manganese dioxide, which can react with a sodium ion to form Na2Mn5O10. The material also happens to be cheap, environmentally benign, and has a high energy density. The authors weren't so careful when they chose the other electrode, as they used silver, which can react with chlorine. Thus, the two electrodes in the device can sequester the ions that form when sodium chloride—common salt—dissolves in water.
This allows for a simple cycle. When salt water flows over the electrodes, they capture the ions, producing a charged Hp dv6000 battery. When the salt water is replaced by freshwater, the cycle can be reversed, but in order to do so, electrons have to flow between the two electrodes, creating a usable current. The authors call their device a "mixing entropy battery," and show some examples that perform at about 75 percent of the theoretical efficiency, with no decline over 100 cycles. They also show that it works perfectly well with environmental samples.
There's not a huge amount of energy available per device, but the authors calculate that a freshwater flow of 40 cubic meters a second could generate up to 100MW. For context, Niagara Falls sees over 1,800 m3/s. Globally, about 2TW of energy could be harvested. That's not a lot compared to our energy needs, but the approach could be part of a renewable portfolio, since it could run around the clock provided that the fresh water stream is kept separate from the salt.
But the authors also offer a less grand but possibly more compelling application: a simple system for storing solar power. A closed solar still could evaporate fresh water from a salt stock, allowing a source of material to discharge the Toshiba pa3534u-1bas battery. The authors also demonstrate one of these devices, and show it can run for over 100 cycles with no loss of efficiency.
For all their devices, the authors say that it should be possible to improve the geometry of the electrodes to boost efficiencies even further. This doesn't seem like the sort of thing that's going to set the world on fire—the energy involved is simply too small—but an improved version may provide a simple, flexible way of storing renewable power in some specific contexts.
Laptop batteries are crucial when working on the road. To get maximum performance from your laptop battery, fully optimize the laptop's power management features prior to use. However, there is a trade off when setting your laptop power management. You will achieve better power conservation in exchange for lesser computing performance. The power management system conserves the laptop battery power by setting the processor to run at a slower speed, dimming the laptop screen, slowing down the hard drive when it's not in use and causing the machine to go into sleep or suspend mode when it is inactive. Your laptop user's guide will provide information relating to specific power management features.

However, this comes with a price, your unplugged usage is restricted by the life of your laptop battery unless a handy wall socket in nearby. A laptop battery rarely provides more than an hour of use when listening to tunes, watching movies or playing games. Some people have overcome this shortcoming by buying extra batteries and external power sources. However, this can be a pricey option. There are a number of simple ways you can improve your laptop battery to give you more running time.
Here 8 Ways to Improve Laptop Battery Power :
1. Use the Power Options
Power management options in Windows, known as Power Options, are a great way to draw less battery power and add to your running time between charges. The power options give you the ability to control your hardware activity, set sleep and hybrid sleep options and take advanced measures to control your laptop battery usage. Vista gives you much more control over how your laptop battery will be used than previous Windows operating system. However, Windows XP also gives you a comprehensive way to save your laptop battery power.
2. FilesRemove all USB devices.
Yes, USB storage devices drain your laptop battery. USB storage devices, a mouse and even a wireless adapter require a large amount of your battery power to remain active. You should remove all unused USB devices to conserve your laptop battery power.

3. Keep your DVD/CD player empty.
Listening CD or watching DVD in one of the major causes of laptop battery drain. There are a tremendous amount of mechanical process that occur to spin the disk in your CD/DVD drive. Keep these drives empty by copying the movies and songs to your hard drive. The movies can be loaded without into your RAM without the need for battery consuming CD/DVD hardware.
4. Clean up your
A messy filing system can spell murder for your laptop battery. Your CPU needs your laptop battery power to keep all files on your computer active. Even unwanted files need your computer's resources. Remove temporary files, unnecessary programs and other clutter to cut down on laptop battery power consumption. A good Defrag schedule will also reduce the clutter and require your computer to work less to find files. The more efficient your computer's performance is the more efficient your power usage. 5. Turn off Your Wireless Adapter
A built in wireless adapter is a handy piece of hardware. However, all hardware needs your laptop battery power. So, the wireless adapter should be turned off when not in use. There is usually a switch in front of your laptop. If wireless adapter can't be turned off with a physical button, use the Power Options. Be sure that you conserve your laptop battery by switching this off when its not in use.
6. Turn down the Brightness
It takes a lot of energy to light up your screen. Simply turning screen brightness down a by a small increment will significantly add to your laptop battery power(Hp dv9000 batteries,Hp 530 battery). You can reduce your screen brightness in a number of ways. Some laptops have a button on their base. However, you can reduce it using one of the function keys usually F6, or simply reduce it using the Power Options.
7. Increase Your RAM
Ram acts as temporary storage for data. This takes a tremendous load of your computer CPU and hard disk. Ram makes it possible to use less processing power and reduces the need to constantly read data off your hard disk. This in turn reduces the amount of battery power consumed by your computer. Savvy Vista users know that the more gigs you have of RAM the less bulky and resource demanding the O.S. is on your processor.
8. External Battery Power
Recently supplementary batteries have become much cheaper and smaller. Some weigh a little as 500 grams and are designed to sit comfortably underneath your laptop. This option sometimes triples the laptop battery(Toshiba satellite a100 battery,Sony vgp-bps2a laptop battery) life when not plugged in. However, this is still the most expensive option.
