Lenovo is inching closer to taking the second spot from Dell

Lenovo nudged out Acer to become the world's third-largest PC maker, and is inching closer to taking the second spot from Dell, according to IDC research released on Wednesday.
Lenovo benefitted from stable PC growth in Asia-Pacific and an expansion of its distribution channel in more regions, IDC said. Acer tumbled into fourth place after a management shakeup ousted Gianfranco Lanci as the company's CEO in March and after mismanagement of inventory in the company's distribution channel in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Lenovo's shipments grew by 22.9 percent during the second quarter, which bucked the slower-than-expected PC growth during the quarter, according to IDC. Worldwide PC shipments totaled 84.4 million units during the second quarter, growing by just 2.6 percent compared to the year-ago quarter, IDC said. Hewlett-Packard and Dell were the world's top two PC makers.
Overall PC shipments grew at a slow pace due to interest in tablets and weakened spending by consumers and businesses as a result of uncertain economic conditions, said Jay Chou, senior research analyst at IDC.
The U.S. and Western Europe experienced weak PC demand, and netbook shipments continued to drop in the U.S. during the second quarter due to tablets, IDC said. PC shipments grew in Asia-Pacific, up over 12 percent.

"Product refreshes and promotions in the second half of the year as well as easier year-ago data should boost growth in the second half of the year," Chou said.
Lenovo's worldwide PC shipments totaled 10.3 million units during the quarter, while Acer's shipments totaled 9.2 million units, declining by 10.1 percent. Lenovo's market share during the quarter was 12.2 percent, closing in on Dell, which maintained a 12.9 percent market share. Dell shipped 10.9 million units, growing by 2.8 percent. HP held an 18.1 percent market share, with shipments totaling 15.2 million units during the second quarter, growing by 3 percent.

Magic Batteries Technology

Three weeks into using Apple’s Magic Trackpad, there’s some good news and not so good news to share as an update to my earlier articles on both the Trackpad and the Apple Battery Charger.
The good news: my “early hands-on” left open the possibility that the initially good accessory could come to feel great, and it did. One week into using the Magic Trackpad, it became a completely comfortable replacement for a comparable desktop mouse (specifically Apple’s solid Magic Mouse, which I’d liked but not loved before getting the Trackpad), and when I hit the two-week mark, I was ready to say that I wouldn’t give up Hp 6735b battery the Magic Trackpad for a mouse again. The act of calibrating the Magic Trackpad properly for the screen size of your computer is the point at which you start to appreciate how viable it is as a mouse replacement, and though finger- rather than laser-precision may be an issue for some people, it hasn’t been a problem for me at all. Between the complete access to multi-touch gestures, including ones left out of the Magic Mouse, and the fact that I can achieve the same use of my computer without the footprint of a mouse pad, I’m sold, locked in, and very happy with this accessory. It’s become a “pry it from my cold, dead hands” add-on for my Mac, which is exactly what I hoped for when I made the purchase.

I popped in a fully charged set of Apple’s rechargeable batteries on August 3, the day the Apple Battery Charger arrived, which is to say it’s been nearly 15 days since I started with a 100% Trackpad Battery Level. Today, it’s at 14% percent, which means I might get three or four more days out of these batteries before they need to be swapped and recharged. Even by Magic Mouse standards, 20-day battery life* sucks. Based on early testing noted in the comments to the original Trackpad article, it looked like the higher-capacity disposable batteries included with the Magic Trackpad would have lasted for three months before needing to be thrown away and replaced, but the rechargeables are running down at a rate that seems disproportionately and suspiciously high. In any case, since I regularly use a wired Apple keyboard, I would seriously prefer to just pop a USB cable from a wired Magic Trackpad into the spare USB port on the keyboard’s side. But Apple doesn’t make a wired Magic Trackpad. I wish the company’s growing team of magicians would conjure one up, because as fun as battery swaps with coin-operated swirled metal compartments may be, I could do without them. You probably could, too.

VCs are more likely to invest their dollars in slightly less ambitious energy-efficiency projects, Paul Kedrosky, senior fellow at the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, told the audience at GigaOM’s Green:Net conference. Kedrosky sat down with a panel of VC heavy hitters for a discussion on what’s hot and what’s not in the second wave of clean-tech investing.
And what’s hot, they all agreed — is incremental improvements.

If Apple announces the iPhone 2 as expected it tomorrow, it will likely run, like the first model, on a lithium-polymer battery. As do all those new Android tablets and smart phones, and the new electric vehicles that will save us, finally, from our "dependency on foreign oil." So where will the lithium come from and will there be enough?
Lithium is the lightest metal, and much of the current supply is in a few brine or clay deposits, mainly in Bolivia and Chile, with the next smaller sources in western Australia and some deposits in China. Some is found in igneous rock. A Reuters news analysis noted nearly two years ago in May 2009"There are enormous possibilities for profit." The reason? The projected boom in demand for lithium.
Lithium salts are used in mood-stabilizing drugs; and in a range of industrial applications: heat-resistant glass and ceramics, high strength-to-weight alloys used in aircraft, and in lithium and lithium-ion batteries.
Electric vehicles, or EVs, are widely expected to send demand for lithium soaring. For EVs to have even the remotest chance of actually reducing oil consumption, let alone "eliminating our oil dependency," millions of of them will have to built and sold and run. Western Lithium sources some data to show a steeply rising demand for lithium, the graph of which isreproduced by The Fiscal Times (you can find the full WL presentation on the company's Website.) Somewhat coyly, the mining company doesn't project the impact of demand on price, which the graph shows has actually dropped since early 2009, due to the global financial crisis.
The headline at The Fiscal Times headline is pure alarmism: "Back to Land Lines? Cell Phones May Be Dead by 2015."
But according to a Tucson, Arizona-based TRU Group, which has a consulting practice in lithium exploration and process engineering, the financial crisis has hammered the market, depressing prices, even as production and reserves will more than meet the projected demand. In a presentation at the January 2011 3rd Lithium Supply & Markets Conference in Toronto, the company highlighted the "seemingly unstoppable supply growth" that "will cause such huge overcapacity that the stability of the industry will be threatened."
TRU sees no shortage in lithium supplies to at least 2020. "Pipeline projects and expansions could increase capacity by about 40,000 tpy Li-contained in the next decade – double what the industry needs," according the company. "Existing lithium chemical producers have the in-ground resources and ability to meet nearly all market requirements by expanding capacity." Prices for lithium carbonate fell steeply in 2010 and will remain depressed.  "Long term there is no market-driven upward-price pressure so prices will remain stable and likely below $5000" per ton. Startup and new project producers, lured by the rosy demand forecasts will find it impossible to compete against the distinctive natural cost advantage of brine-based producers" specifically Chemetall-SCL, FMC and SQM.

On display at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show were several manufacturers’ mock-ups of the smarter home and car. The presentations on the show floor displayed homes that pretty much think for themselves – a washing machine that turns on during lowest energy hours, or an oven that downloads recipes (LG is really working on this). Toshiba is developing its Home Energy Management System (HEMS), which will monitor and forecast your home’s energy output in real-time numbers. Essentially, all of the appliances, electronics and climate control will be powered by a rechargeable battery that stores energy generated from solar power or fuel cells.
“In the future there will be chips in your appliances, fridges and washing machine communicating back to you so that you can track each individual appliance.
