Top tips to take care your batteries to the best

With average U.S. gasoline prices approaching $4 a gallon, drivers and automakers are thinking electric. Previously steered in this direction by concerns about pollution and dependence on foreign oil, consumer interest in electric-drive cars continues to surge. The Large-Volume Battery Calorimeter (LVBC) a crucial tool to help put these new automobiles on the road. Unveiled last year by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the LVBC is designed to precisely measure the heat generated by batteries for electric-drive vehicles, analyze temperature's effects on systems, and help pinpoint the ways to manage battery temperatures for the best performance and maximum life. The Vehicle Technologies Program at the Department of Energy supported the development and fabrication of the LVBC for advancing battery technologies for advanced vehicles.
To make electric-drive vehicles that are attractive to consumers, the batteries that power those cars need to be affordable, high-performing, long-lasting, and operate at maximum efficiency in a wide range of driving conditions and climates. The next generation of electric-drive cars and light trucks will be required to travel farther on electric power alone, placing greater energy demands on the vehicles' battery packs. As the packs get larger, regulating battery temperatures become even more important in helping improve performance, lifespan, safety and affordability. The best tool automakers have for assessing thermal control and optimizing battery performance is NREL's LVBC.
"NREL's large-volume battery calorimeter is the first system large enough and accurate enough to test the whole battery systems for electric vehicles," says Dr. Said Al-Hallaj, chairman and CEO of AllCell, a major battery integrator. "We strongly believe that this leading-edge instrument is critical in developing the battery management system of the next generation of electric vehicles."
"Larger and more advanced versions of the lithium ion battery technology that powers laptops are the next wave in energy storage for plug-in hybrid and all-electric vehicles. High temperatures shorten the life of lithium ion batteries, while cold temperatures diminish lithium ion batteries' power capabilities and hurt overall vehicle performance. NREL's LVBC is the only calorimeter capable of accurately quantifying the heat generation and efficiency of these lithium ion batteries(Dell inspiron 1720 battery, Dell inspiron 1520 battery)," said NREL Principal Engineer Ahmad Pesaran, who leads the vehicle Energy Storage projects.
Greatest Volume and Accuracy
The largest and most-accurate device of its kind, the LVBC can determine the exact amount of heat generated by battery cells, modules, sub-packs, and even some full-size packs as they are charged and discharged. It combines a high volume test chamber and wide temperature range options with state-of-the-art thermal isolation and control, current load capabilities and precision measurement.
In addition, the LVBC is the only calorimeter designed to test the liquid-cooled batteries found in the Ford Electric Focus, the Chevy Volt, and the Tesla Roadster. GM used an earlier NREL calorimeter to help create the Volt battery.
"We knew there was a need for this technology. Testing cells and smaller modules in lower-capacity calorimeters was only giving us — and car and battery manufacturers — part of the picture," said NREL Senior Engineer Matthew Keyser, who developed the LVBC.
Despite the LVBC's large size, its heat-flux measurements are extremely precise, recording heat rates as low as 15 milliwatts and heat inputs as low as 15 Joules — about the amount of energy released while rubbing your hands together. Achieving this degree of sensitivity in such a large volume required a number ofdesign innovations, including superior thermal isolation and the ability to test batteries under realistic driving conditions. The instrument is able to determine heat levels and energy efficiency within plus or minus 2 percent of actual values.
Troubleshooting Before Cars Hit the Road
Members of the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium, which includes Chrysler, Ford and GM, realize that in-depth analysis of battery heat management issues can help automakers troubleshoot thermal issues and engineer systems capable of maintaining batteries within the ideal temperature range. The comprehensive and accurate information that the LVBC provides will be critical to the automotive and battery industry as new advanced batteries and thermal managementsystems are optimized for the next generation of electric-drive vehicles. NREL is testing batteries from a number of battery developers including A123Systems, LGChem-CPI, and Johnson Control Saft in the LVBC.

Battery Technology for Chasing batteries to storage

Batteries—in other words, electrochemical storage—have a range of useful applications on the grid, but their performance, cost-effectiveness and siting requirements must be refined, according to a recent paper by researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratorybatteries in recycling bin
That refinement process is likely to require more utility-based demonstration projects, researchers said.
Battery applications such as power reliability, frequency regulation, renewable energy integration and energy management must be honed via further basic and applied research, particularly in utility demonstration projects, researchers said in a recent paper.
"While there has been increased interest and attempts to improve stationary storage, investment in the area is still limited in comparison with that of Li-ion batteries for vehicle applications," concluded Gary Yang, lead author of "Electrochemical Storage for Green Grid," and a lab fellow at PNNL. (The paper was published in Chemical Reviews in March. Subscription required.)
"Currently," Yang pointed out, "there are only a few government-funded programs worldwide with limited funding for developing electricity storage technologies for stationary applications."
Hurdles include lack of public and political awareness, current regulatory approaches Dell studio 1535 battery and government support, Yang suggested.
On the "bright side" (my phrase):
  • The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 authorized $50 million annually for a decade for basic research; $80 million annually for a decade for applied research and $100 million annually for demonstration projects.
  • The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 funded 16 storage demonstration projects with $185 million in federal monies and $585 million in private sector investment.
  • China and various European nations are also investing and conducting stationary storage research and development.
Aside from cost and performance, advances are needed in chemistries, materials, cell/stack design and system engineering, Yang and his co-authors said.

Readers, one issue that arises here is that research and development (R&D) on battery technologies could mean greater choices for the myriad grid applications that will evolve over coming decades. Failure to do so could mean fewer choices. The work is expensive and, in my opinion, the cost-share between taxpayer and private sector is healthy.
This is a political issue, a budget issue and a technology issue that won't go away. Cynics may suggest that researchers naturally will propose more research. Private sector entities with an interest in moving battery technologies to market—and utilities that might benefit—clearly have an interest in overcoming hurdles. The public may eventually benefit, but broad support for utility-scale battery technology may be difficult to achieve, given the somewhat arcane nature of the pros and cons.

Demand for the iPad 2 far outweighed stock levels when it first saw light of day, and while Apple’s own online store quoted 4-5 week delivery times, that has since been reduced to 2-3 weeks. This has no doubt pleased those that have been waiting for their tablet to arrive.
However there are other outlets to purchase the touchscreen slate, one being Best Buy. While rumors recently suspected a “blacklisting” for the retailers shipment of any more iPad 2′s over a dispute with sales, a leaked memo shows that this may well not be the case.
As Apple Insider commented, Best Buy became one of the main outlet partners for the first and second gen iPad.

Reservation systems have been disabled but will be fired back up and continue for at least a week once the promotional period has stopped. As Best Buy state any reserve orders will take priority once the stores receive their shipments. The memo also stated, “the reserve order system will be turned on for the entire week of the ad, possibly longer.” There is instruction to employees not to hold units for customers for periods longer than 48 hours.
Stores are informed that Best Buy’s “Corporate Support Teams” are fully aware that sales demand is highly likely to exceed outlets stock levels. Josh Ong from AppleInsider is reporting that a leaked internal memo indicates that Best Buy is planning a promotion push for the iPad 2. It is also thought the retailer will restart taking reserve orders for the device for at least a week after the sales promotion.
The memo which was originally leaked by Engadget states the promotion will begin on April 17, and ordering system for reserving the iPad 2 will also be switched back on. It is thought that some stores will have a minimum of three iPad 2s.
People who have an iPad 2 already reserved still get priority over any iPad 2 stocks that the company has, and as soon as any remaining stock has sold the stores will begin taking reserve orders for the tablet PC. The memo states that reserved units will not be held for longer than 48 hours and also staff at Best Buy are now allowed to buy an iPad 2.

The iPad 2 goes on sale Friday, March 11 at most all Apple stores. If you want to avoid the lines you might try buying your iPad 2 from Best Buy, Walmart or Target, as they will all be selling the new tablet.
Online buyers can order an iPad 2 from Apple or AT&T starting at 4 a.m. ET Friday. Retails sales begin at 5 p.m. local time.
As of tomorrow 5pm you will be able to buy the iPad 2 in several locations, including of course the Apple Store. For those of you who don’t want to wait in line, Apple will allow for iPad 2 orders online as of 1am PST.
I need 3 iPads so here is my strategy: I’ll set my alarm clock at 1am and order 2 iPads, one white, one black. These 2 iPads are gifts for my mother and mother in law.
I’ll go to the Apple Store Friday before 5pm and get the line. As soon as I get inside the store, I will check out the 2 colors and decide whether I want to go with white or black. Historically, I’ve always chose black products, but I have to admit the white iPad 2 looks gorgeous.
Unless you’re an Apple fanatic like me, I believe the best solution for you is to order online. Sure you won’t get instant gratification, but Apple said they will ship online orders fast. That means that you could get your new iPad as early as Saturday, or, worst case scenario, on Monday.
So, what are you going to do?
Apple has issued a press release today confirming some of the details of tomorrow’s iPad 2 launch, including the times the iPad 2 will go on sale online and in retail outlets:

They also offered a reminder on iPad 2 model pricing in the US:

Four valuable yet hard-to-find settings For Your Facebook

1. Facebook check-ins and privacy

When Facebook announced its location-based check-in service, “Places,” in August 2010, it was quickly met with concerns about its people tagging feature.
With this feature enabled, your Facebook friends can tag you and “check you in” to a place. You receive a notification when you’re tagged, and an update is posted on your wall telling your friends where you are and who you’re with. You can remove the tag at any time.
To disable the feature, visit Account -> Privacy Settings -> Customize Settings. Scroll to the middle section—“things others share”—and click “Edit settings” next to “Friends can check me in to Places.”
Another important Facebook privacy setting to review if you use Places is whether or not you want to be included in a “People Here Now” list once you check in to a location.
By default, your name and Facebook profile picture appear in the list, which is visible to anyone—friend or not—who checks in to the same location. To disable this setting, visit Account -> Privacy Settings- > Customize Settings, and then uncheck the box at the bottom of the first section that reads, “Include me in ‘People Here Now’ after I check in.”

2. Revoking Facebook’s “Instant Personalization”

“Instant Personalization” debuted in April 2010 to plenty of criticism, and for good reason: The feature is confusing and Facebook’s online explanation does not make it clear how participating sites use your information.
If you visit one of the sites that supports Instant personalization—Bing, TripAdvisor, Rotten Tomatoes, Pandora, Yelp and others—and you’ve enabled the feature, you can see which of your friends have “liked” certain movies or news stories and browse reviews they posted.
