Top Tips for keeping your Mac cool under pressure

After upgrading to Lion on my early 2008 15″ MacBook Pro, I started to notice that the computer was hot to the touch. Really hot. So I started measuring the internal temperature of my Macs to see if there was anything to be truly alarmed about.

It turns out that Mac Intel chips have a built-in feature called THERMTRIP that will temporarily suspend the CPU when things get hot, and shut down the CPU altogether when things get too hot. Speculation is that this temperature is somewhere in the neighborhood of 120-130ºC. While my Macs did not reach three digit temperatures, the increase did alarm me. Luckily, as you can see, the temperatures settled down to a normal range after a few days. This is likely due to the machines running a lot of initial tasks like Spotlight indexing of your entire drive just after the Lion upgrade.
Still, if you, like me, are concerned and want to do something a little more proactive than just waiting, here are a few precautionary measures you can take:
iStat Pro Dashboard Widget. One of the first (and lately the only dashboard widgets) I installed is iSlayer’s iStat Pro. This widget will allow you to monitor several of your Mac’s vital statistics, and with the optional companion iOS app, you can monitor your Mac from your iPhone when you’re attached to the same Wi-Fi network. Information reported includes systems various temperatures, and the speed of your Mac’s internal fans. The problem is that as your Mac keeps getting hotter, your fans aren’t spinning faster, something for which we turn to the next tool.
smcFanControl Menu utility for Mac. To manually modify the speed of your internal fans, you can install Hendrik Holtmann’s smcFanControl. For some of the older Macs that are still technically capable of running OS X 10.7 Lion, you may find that they are having some difficulty keeping up at times, and the default fan speed just will not provide the relief required. This menu bar item will allow you to change the minimum fan speed and effectively take control of just how fast your fan will blow. I created two custom settings: a midrange setting at 4000 RPM, and a high setting at 6000 RPM and will turn them on when I see things get a little too hot. I then set things back to Apple’s default levels once things cool down.
Purchase a laptop stand. Proper ventilation is key to allowing your Mac to cool down under normal conditions. Placing your laptop on a pillow or blanket because it is running hot may do more harm than good, especially if you end up blocking the vents that are trying to expel all that hot air. My personal favorite is the Cooling Bar from Just Mobile for $39.95US.  I find it convenient to carry with me and easy to set up.  Just Mobile has other stands for your MacBook as well. And if you tend to keep your Macbook closed when at a desk, consider Twelve South’s BookArc Pro for $49.99 U.S.
Let us know if you have other tips for keeping your Mac cool under pressure, or if you’re seeing temperature spikes under Lion that last beyond the first few days.

Apple's launch of the Wi-Fi iPad 2 in China

The iPad 2 went on sale at Apple Stores in China at 8 a.m. Friday. The touchscreen tablet also launched on the China Apple Online Store, which was taken down early Friday and returned with an iPad 2 shipping estimate of one to two weeks.

At the Cupertino, Calif., company's flagship store in Beijing, the line still numbered in the hundreds by 10 a.m. local time. Apple retail staff carefully managed the line, allowing just a handful of customers in at a time. Dozens of scalpers congregated outside the retail store, offering to sell the device, which starts at 3688 yuan ($568), for a markup of just 200 yuan ($30).
The launch drew noticeably more customers than last year's launch of the original iPad. However, weather may have played a part, as last year's launch compaq dv2000 battery,Compaq nc6000 battery was rained out.
This year, Apple retail staff put in place more organized rules for customers choosing to wait overnight and provided a waiting room and numbered wristbands. The first customers reportedly began arriving at 5 p.m. the day before.
"If you leave the queue, an Apple staff member will take your wristband. If you return within one hour, it will be given back to you. If you return more than one hour later, you will be given a new wristband for a different place in line," one sign detailing the new rules read.
An informal exit survey of customers appeared to indicate that the white iPad 2 was more popular than the black model. Also, remaining inventory stored behind the Apple Store cash register was skewed heavily toward the black model, though the proportion of black to white iPads Apple that started the day with remains unclear.
White versions of Apple's products have proved popular in China in the past. Analyst Brian White with Ticonderoga Securities said last month that China was "a prime candidate for a 'white' iPhone 4." The white iPhone 4 quickly sold out in mainland China when it was released there late last month.
Apple has made an effort to shorten the gap between the U.S. and China releases Cheap Dell inspiron 1520 battery,Dell inspiron 1525 battery of its major products. The first-generation iPad took four months to officially arrive in China, while the iPhone 4 saw a two month delay and the iPad 2 launched less than two months after the U.S. release.

China's thriving grey market may have motivated Apple to shorten the gap between products. Last year, rampant scalping outside of Apple's stores in China resulted in a scuffle between customers and grey market resellers.
During its quarterly earnings call last month, the company indicated that its China strategy would serve as a model for similar emerging markets. Apple has been "on a tear" in China, with overall sales reaching just under $5 billion, roughly 10 percent of total revenues, in the first half of fiscal 2011.

Dell begin using mushroom-based packaging for some of its shipments

Making packaging materials from mushrooms and common agricultural waste products such as cotton, rice, and wheat chaff is an initiative sponsored by the National Science Foundation, the US EPA, and the USDA, among others.
The sustainable materials replace styrofoam and polyethylene commonly used as cushioning, and they can be composted.
"We've tested the mushroom cushioning extensively in the lab to ensure it meets our same high standards to safely protect our products during shipment(Dell inspiron 600m battery,Dell inspiron 6400 battery)--and it passed like a champ," Dell said in a blog post.
Initial pilot shipments will be for Dell's PowerEdge R710 server in the Multipack packaging configuration. Four systems fit in one box, which dramatically reduce packaging material.
The mushroom cushioning is unique because it is grown and not manufactured in the traditional sense, Dell said.
"The process works like this. Waste product like cotton hulls are placed in a mold which is then inoculated with mushroom spawn. Our cushions take 5 - 10 days to grow as the spawn, which become the root structure--or by the scientific name, mycelium--of the mushroom. All the energy needed to form the cushion is supplied by the carbohydrates and sugars in the ag waste. There's no need for energy based on carbon or nuclear fuels."
Dell hopes the mushroom packaging will complement its bamboo packaging, providing a better option for heavier products like servers and desktops.
Bamboo, which the company began using in 2009, is better suited for notebooks and smartphones, Dell said. Currently the company is shipping approximately half of its Inspiron line of consumer laptops in bamboo.
Dell aims to eliminate about 20 million pounds of packaging material from its shipments by the end of 2012, while cutting desktop and laptop packaging by around 10%, increasing sustainable content in cushioning and corrugate packaging by 40%. Dell also wants 75 % of its packaging components to be curbside recyclable by 2012.
Thanks to leaked FCC schematics and specs, word is out that Dell(Dell inspiron 1520 batteries,Dell inspiron 1525 battery) is developing a new convertible tablet and notebook combo. The 15-inch device, code named the "Dell Panerai", may follow in the footsteps of the 10-inch Inspiron Duo convertible, though it's not clear whether the Panerai will feature the same flip design.
What we do know from the FCC filing is that the Panerai will have both a "laptop mode" and a "tablet mode" and that there's an Intel Centrino 6230 wireless chipset a/b/g/n

5. The battery properly store
When not in use for a long time, the Dell vostro 1510 battery should be stored in a clean, dry and cool to be free from heat and other metals. A loss of the battery stores its load time and needs a break before reuse.
