Notebooks Maybe replaced by Tablets in 2011

We have been talking about the impact of tablets on the laptop market with netbooks taking the biggest impact. Since netbooks have a physical keyboard, one might argue that tablets, by not having one, would be less valuable to business people. While tablets do have bluetooth connectivity, you could use a bluetooth keyboard to improve your entry speed. The trends are continuing for existing laptop users to be taking a serious look at tablets to determine if they are a replacement for their existing notebook. Two reports have come out this week which seem to support the trends that we are talking about.
A new ChangeWave report, as reported by Apple Insider, shows that corporations are moving towards increasing tablet devices, which would result in a decrease in notebooks purchases. ChangeWave has great resources for finding out what things are looking like for businesses in the coming months. In their latest report, they are reporting that iPad satisfaction in businesses is very strong.
- iPad – 69% very satisfied
- HP Tablet – 23% very satisfied
- Dell – 12% very satisfied
- Apple iPad – 78%
- Dell – 9%
- RIM/Blackberry – 9%
- HP – 8%
- Samsung – 4%
With those kinds of numbers, the iPad should have a great year in 2011 for business purchases. With the iPad having a proven track record, business are showing 7% tablet usage currently and for the 1st quarter of 2011 they are projecting 14% tablet usage in the businesses. That is a great jump and indicates that notebooks will be having a reducing role. Projections for which device they will be looking at purchasing tablets in the 1st quarter from the ChangeWave report are:
The numbers overwhelmingly favor Apple’s iPad and with the iPad 2 expected to be out in April, 2011, they will easily continue that trend in the 2nd quarter of 2011. Obviously, businesses are not taking a serious look at the competition in near term tablet purchases. The fact remains that they are planning on doubling the number of tablets in the organization.
In another report from All Things Digital, an analyst at Goldman Sachs, Bill Shope, is reporting that tablets will “cannibalize” notebook sales in 2011 and 2012. If tablets did not take notebook sales, the estimate is growth of 11.4% for 2011 and 9.5% in 2012. Tablets will replace notebook sales at a rate of 35% in 2011 and 33% in 2012. Those are staggering numbers and spell big problems for manufacturers who do not have current plans to release a tablet in the 1st quarter of 2011.
