Guide to Lithium batteries

Guide  to Lithium batteries for a beginner - http://wholesaleeshop.com.au
This guide is intended for the RC racing market, but applies to the whole hobby industry with those using Lithium Polymer and other Lithium based cells.
Introduction
Advantages and disadvantages.

GoodBad
  • Lightweight
  • No memory effects
  • Typically lower voltage drop
  • Very high capacities available
  • Very high energy density
  • 20-30% longer runtime than NiCad/NiMH of same capacity
  • Can be more expensive
  • Can be dangerous if handled badly
  • Not very felxable configuration (hard to do split cell layout).
  • Difficult to fit into some vehicles due to shape
Cell configuration
Lithium Polymer (LiPo) and other lithium batteries are no longer just the future of the RC electric market, but also very much the present as well. As people move away from their traditional cells such as NiCad and NiMH, particularly in the RC car racing market where LiPo is now legal across most classes and finally gaining momemntum, more and more questions are being asked about the basics of LiPo technology. I have therefore made this guide to explain the basics to the LiPo newcomers, the guide is particularly aimed at the RC car community but a lot of the discussion is universal to all modellers.

I feel before getting stuck into details about LiPo, I should quickly cover why people want to move to lithium technology.
You will often see a lithium battery stated as 2S1P or 3S2P etc, but what does this mean? This refers to the configuration of the cells. 2S means 2 cells in series, and 1P means they are parallel, whereas 2P would mean 2 cells in parallel etc. Unlike the 1.2V per cell of NiCad/NiMH, LiPo is are 3.7V per cell.
Consequently a 2S lithium battery is 7.4 volts (3.7 x 2). This is the common, and race legal configuration. The “P” value is less important, manufacturers often use cells in parallel to increase capacity or current in a particular configuration which perhaps uses smaller cells. For racing however, how many P is not important, it is the overall C rating that really matters.
