This is a great time of the year for good deals on laptops, but the best ones are nearly always the offers that come direct from the manufacture and this usually means Dell. In this case Dell are pushing the new Inspiron 17R it has been around for a little while, but it is summer and time to get those sales going in the only way that Dell knows, Discount! There is not a massive amount off this machine, just $178, but it’s better than nothing and very disappointing for anyone who bought one of these last week at the full price of $877.99.
The Inspiron 17R is effectively a replacement for your desk top machine, it is that powerful with a second generation Intel Core i5-430M processor running at a nice 2.26 GHz, so this laptop can handle more or less anything that the user throws at it. Dell made this laptop big, with a huge 17.3 inch high definition LED Display with TrueLife and a pixel resolution of 1600 x 900, which performs nicely with the Intel HD Graphics or HD Graphics 3000 with up to 1.6 GB Dynamic Video Memory and the Integrated 1.0 mega pixel widescreen HD Webcam.

Storage is made up by a memory of a 4 GB Single Channel of DDR3 SDRAM at 1333 MHz and a Hard Drive with 500 GB SATA hard drive (5400RPM). As expected networking comes in the form of an Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 and 1×2 bgn + Bluetooth and for portability the Inspiron 17R has a 48 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery, which Dell claims could last for five hours, but we suspect that the real figure is much less especially when everything is running at full blast.
The Inspiron 17R is one of the first laptops to cross our doorstep with two USB 3.0 ports. It also has a single USB 2.0 port, as well as a combination USB 2.0/eSATA port. Both HDMI and VGA video outputs are on board, and the WiDi support allows you to send a video signal wirelessly to a TV or other external display with an appropriate adapter. Dell sells Netgear's Push2TV WiDi adapter for $80.
Connectivity is top-notch with 802.11n (single-band) Wi-Fi, gigabit ethernet, and Bluetooth on board. The included My WiFi software from Intel can turn the 17R into a mobile hotspot. Other features include an internal DVD burner (a Blu-ray player is available), and an SD card slot.
