ARM officials talk up plans to become a larger player in the mobile PC arena




Acer, Toshiba and Asus are among the PC vendors that may roll out notebooks powered by ARM processors by the end of the year, according to reports.
Quoting “industry sources,” DigiTimes is reporting that those OEMs, as well as Samsung Electronics, are working on notebooks that would be powered by chips using ARM designs and running Google’s Android operating system.

The devices would come as ARM officials talk up plans to become a larger player in the mobile PC arena, particularly among notebooks and mini-PCs. It’s part of a larger aggressive push by ARM officials to move their chip designs beyond smartphones and tablets. ARM-designed chips—manufactured by the likes of Samsung, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm, Marvell Technologies and Nvidia—currently dominate the rapidly growing smartphone and tablet markets, which x86-based chip-makers Intel and Advanced Micro Devices are trying to enter.
At the same time, ARM is looking to grow into markets dominated by Intel and AMD, in particular mobile PCs and servers.
ARM President Tudor Brown, during a press conference at the Computex 2011 show May 30, said that by the end of the year, he expects his company to command about 15 percent of the mobile PC space, aided by the growth in tablets. By 2015, Brown said, ARM’s market share will be more than 50 percent.

ARM’s efforts to move into mobile PCs and servers include growing the number of processing cores in its chip designs—the Cortex-A9 currently offers up to four cores—while also adding key features. For example, ARM’s upcoming Cortex-A15 designs will include greater memory capacity and support for virtualization.
Those efforts also will be buoyed when the next version of Microsoft’s Windows OS—commonly referred to as Windows 8—is released. Microsoft executives announced earlier this year that Windows 8 will support SoC (system-on-a-chip) architectures like the ones designed by ARM. As ARM executives look to move up the ladder into mobile PCs and data centers, software compatibility becomes a greater issue. Windows is a dominant operating system in PCs and servers, and most software is designed to run on the x86 architecture.
Having a version of Windows that would run on ARM’s designs could be a boon to the vendor. The sources in the DigiTimes story noted that ARM-based notebooks running Android came on the market a few years ago as “smartbooks.” However, they didn’t sell well because users were disappointed that the software compatibility and performance were not the same as traditional notebooks.
While the Android-running ARM-based notebooks from Acer and the rest could hit the market by the end of this year, systems running Windows 8 won’t be seen until 2012. The sources in the DigiTimes report said that several OEMs could launch ARM-based notebooks that come in at prices lower than $299 as they compete for market share.
Asus is said to be planning a 13-inch laptop with an ARM processor—most likely from Nvidia—and Android, though the company has not announced any plans or shown off a prototype.

HP call center supervisor can not help customer

Consumer electronics have this terrible, terrible habit of breaking down shortly after the manufacturer's warranty is up. In Eva's case, the battery of her HP laptop self-destructed just two weeks after her original warranty ended. She thought that perhaps since her battery had started failing during the warranty period, they might give her a break. Nope. Thus began her battle of wills with R., the HP call center supervisor who can't help you, but answers to no one.
A month or a month and a half ago, my HP G-series laptop started shutting down suddenly. It was annoying, but I thought it was basically an exotic version of a computer crash, so I saved my work a lot and didn't worry about it.
Enter last night, when, two weeks out of warranty, my battery status indicator informed me that ""There is a problem with your battery, so your computer might shut down suddenly. Consider replacing your battery." My computer might shut down suddenly? Like it had been doing already? Ooooh. So what I'd been experiencing was a failing battery.
Well, the computer was only two weeks out of warranty, and the problem had manifested while I had a warranty, so it seemed reasonable to me that HP would agree that 1) one year and two weeks is the world's shortest notebook battery life and not acceptable, and 2) the problem happened while the computer was in warranty. Off I went to call customer service.
I should say that the first two times I called the HP 1-800 number for help, I carefully went through the phone tree like a good girl, pressing all the correct options. After promising to transfer me to the correct department, the phone tree then hung up on me. Twice.
The next time I called, I just said "agent" over and over to the phone tree robot lady, like a demented parrot. This got me through to Rep 1, who told me to buy a new battery and wouldn't (probably couldn't) offer other options. I asked for a supervisor, and he put me on hold...forever. No one ever picked up the phone again.

After going through the "agent" routine with the phone tree again, I got Rep #2, who offered that I could pay $49 or $99 or perhaps $49 and also $99 (it was unclear) for technical support, after which I could buy a battery from him for only $99. I turned down this incredible bargain politely and asked for his supervisor. After 30 minutes on hold, he said that the supervisor was still busy, and the best thing would be for me to hang up and send a letter to HP. I declined this option, which sounded like a non-starter, and asked to wait for the supervisor.
After forty minutes, I got "R.," the supervisor, on the line. R promised to check my battery to see if it was eligible for a recall and then to explore other options with me. He then put me on hold. When he came back, he wanted me to hang up with him and go check an HP website about battery recalls. I told him I'd already checked the website (I had) and my battery wasn't on the list (it wasn't). He then revealed he had checked the website and found the same thing. I'm not sure why he wanted me to check also, but I suspect it was an attempt to get me to hang up.
Anyway, then he launched into the same sales spiel the customer rep had already given me — my battery was out of warranty, but I could pay for this nifty service package! And then they could diagnose it! And then I could buy a new battery!

How to create MAC services with specialized behaviors

Apple offers a number of its own services—like one that supports dictionary lookup on a selected word—that work with the platform's standard applications. Third-party developers can also create services to deploy with their applications. Automator makes it really easy for regular end users to create their own services with specialized behaviors.
As a Linux refugee, one of the features that makes Automator particularly compelling is that it allows me to integrate command-line operations, commands, and pipelines into my Automator workflows. In this tutorial, I'm going to show you two of the ways that I use shell scripting in Automator services in order to simplify my work.

A trivial example

I write virtually all of my articles in the Vim text editor and use Markdown syntax for formatting. On Linux, I used a Markdown processing tool from the command-line to convert my articles to HTML and then piped the output into the xclip command so that I could just paste the finished article directly into Ars Technica's content management system. I had a simple shell script that I could call directly from within Vim itself to perform those steps.
This same approach is still viable on Mac OS X, but I wanted to explore a more Mac-native solution to the same problem. More importantly, I wanted a solution that wasn't tied solely Hp 530 batteries,Hp dv1000 battery to Vim. That's where Automator comes into play. I built a trivial service that wraps a command-line Markdown processor. I can select a block of editable text with Markdown formatting in any Mac application and use the Markdown service to convert it to HTML in place.
To create a service, you start by selecting New from Automator's File menu. Automator will show you a list of available templates and prompt you to choose one for your new project. You should select the Service option, which is accompanied by a gear icon. In your new service, you will see a bar at the top of the Automator flow pane. It has combo boxes that allow you to set filters that establish the conditions in which your service should be made accessible. You want to make a service that receives selected text and will operate in any application.
Below those combo boxes is a checkbox that you can toggle to specify whether you want the output of your service to replace the selected text block. We definitely want that to be checked for our Markdown service, because we are replacing the Markdown-formatted input text with the HTML output provided Hp dv2000 batteries,Hp dv6000 battery by the Markdown processing engine.
The behavior of our Markdown workflow is really simple, so it will only require one action. From the left-hand action library pane, drag the Run Shell Script action out into the workflow pane. It will automatically create a connection with the top bar, indicating that it will use the user's selected text as the initial input.
The shell script action has a few simple options. You can choose the shell environment that you want to use for the operation and you can choose how you want it to handle the input. For the purpose of this example, we want to use the standard Bash shell. We also want to configure the action to pass the input into stdin, the UNIX standard input stream. This is a really useful capability in Automator, because it makes it possible to seamlessly mix Automator workflows with shell pipelines.
In the main text area of the shell action, we need to specify what command-line expression we want Bash to execute. In this case, all we want it to do is run the markdown command. I have already installed the markdown command using the relevant Homebrew package, but Automator's Bash shell doesn't seem to find it in my command path. To work around Automator's difficulty finding the command, I simply put the full path Hp dv6500 battery,Touch Screen Monitors into the text box, as you can see below.
Now that the workflow is complete, you just have to save it under the name Markdown. By default, Automator will store your custom services in the ~/Library/services directory. Any Automator service that is copied into that path will be made available through the services menu under applicable conditions. To run the new service, you just have to select some text and then click the Markdown item in the services menu.
